The Curse of Gremdon began with a fight between the two main characters, who seemed to secretly share feelings for each other. Arianna and Tardon were both warriors who were tasked with protecting their castle. Elders ruled over the castle and its people. The setting seemed be in the medieval past, but it could be a dystopian future. It was unclear.People lived within the walls of the castle, were extremely restricted with every aspect of their lives and sickness and famine were rampant. They were so restricted that they could not marry, could not have sexual relations without permission and could not leave the castle. Any refraction could be cause to be imprisoned or killed horribly by burning. It was a really harsh environment. The people were in constant fear of doing something wrong and of being attacked by zombie-like creatures.The elders sent Tardon and Arianna on a quest to the outside to retrieve something that would save their castle. Once on the outside, things were not what they had appeared to be.I liked the story-line and was pleasantly surprised by an awesome plot twist. The characters were well developed and likable. Tardon was a great warrior hero. He was strong, powerful, kind and passionate. I love how he would sacrifice everything for the woman he loved. Arianna is awesome. She is sweet, caring, family-oriented, wants to do the right things and can kick some serious butt. I liked the relationship Arianna and Tardon had with each other and how they fought side by side.I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.Four Stars * * * *
The Curse of Gremdon by Ciara Knight was just an okay read for me. It is set in a fantasy realm ruled by Elders with feminine oppression and fear of the unknown set the tone. It’s billed as a fantasy, paranormal romance and it is that, but there was a little too much romance for me and not enough story.Arianna is a warrior, the only female warrior (at least from my understanding), training and fighting her way to the top to earn elite status. She’s cunning, ruthless, and guards her heart with a stone wall. When the kingdom fell (more on that in a moment), she lost everyone but her younger brother and she will do whatever it takes to protect him. You gotta love that about her!Tardon is already an elite warrior when the book starts. He is alone and wishes for a family, something forbidden under the Elders. However he accepts their “gifts†willingly until after a training fight where Arianna gets the better of him. He realizes he doesn’t want the cheap whores the Elders send every night, he wants Arianna. His mind is consumed with her and honestly it was a bit odd. A warrior who was content in his ways all of a sudden wanting another warrior? Hmmm….The plot was ALL OVER THE PLACE for me. I really struggled with it! There wasn’t much, if any, backstory about why the inhabitants of Gremdon all lived at the castle, why they weren’t allowed beyond the walls, why the all had to wear an amulet from the Elders, etc. As the reader, you are dropped into this fantasy world and while it is haunting and horrific, you have NO clue what is going on. There is little to no world-building til close to then end but then it makes sense. So if you read and you are lost, stick with it!Overall this book was just ok for me. As I already stated the world-building was lacking and with fantasy that’s a big no-no in my book. Also the romance was a bit over-the-top. It’s a forbidden romance that blossoms between Arianna and Tardon, but I felt like it was more lust than love that the author conveyed. If you enjoy new adult, paranormal romance, than I believe you’ll enjoy this one. It just wasn’t for me.
The Curse of Gremdon opened a portal to a whole new world for me. As I walked through this story the attention to detail was like watching a painter putting a brush to a canvas. It was inspiring. I loved the spin i.e. plot of the story it was different, engaging, dramatic, and yes even a touch of romance was added. However, you will not find a damsel in distress in this story the lead female character Arianna could hold her own and then some. Tardon the main male character he definitely made my head spin a time or two.These two together were amazing. I can say without any doubt that this story held me in it's clutches and I was sorry when it ended. I will be reading the next book in this series you can count on that!
Curse of Gremdon is a good ole fashioned sword and sorcery novel (with the emphasis on "sword" and very little if no "visible" magic at all). It's what us nerds might call a "magic poor" world. But the description fits and the world-building is amazing. The book is mostly told through the experiences of Arianna. She's an amazing warrior with the spirit of Grace Jones' character in Conan the Destroyer but with a component of beautiful femininity that the afore-mentioned character never had. And Tardon is every bit a testosterone-fueled warrior who lops off heads with one arm while embracing his true love with the other.The song done by Bryan Adams called "Have you really loved a woman" comes to mind when seeing Arianna through Tardon's eyes. The story is thick with erotica (and I loved this) and it NEVER gets old. If you are looking for a sexually-charged story that is borderline pornographic yet maintains the side of art instead of descending into details of what goes where and also has an incredibly engaging story, then this novel is for you.Yes, it's an adult book. But I'm an adult and I loved it. There were several times when the heat from the pages made me fan my face and think, "wow...Ciara is such a damn good writer."And the story is in no way predictable. There's a plot twist in there that came out of nowhere. I thought the story was going to be linear...you know...as a reader I had it "all-figured out." I was going to give it four stars because of this. But Ciara surprised me with her cleverness and my eyes opened wide when I realized what was going on.Tardon for all his brawn though is so wimpy when it comes to child-birth. I guess that makes this tough guy kinda cute.
