A very thorough discussion and description (with numerous photos and diagrams) of the battleships and cruisers of the Imperial German Navy from its inception in the middle of the 19th century through the last survivors during World War II (the emphasis is on those ships that would participate in major naval operations; torpedo boats/destroyers and submarines are not considered). An excellent reference book for this subject, and useful as well to model ship builders.

An excellent and insightful volume that does for German battleships and battlecruisers what Norman Friedman, R.A. Burt, Allen Raven and John Roberts did for American and British capital ships. Dodson does an excellent job of placing the ships in context--the German context--in which they were constructed, exploding some long-held beliefs about the so-called competition in battleships with Great Britain, and certain peculiar German design traits. What is revealed is a young, flawed, but professional German Navy that much like the American and British navies was more at war, and in competition with, its legislature and administration than with any foreign power, when it came to building capital ships. Budgets, harbor depths, dock sizes, and the rapidly changing state-of-the-art in technology, strategy, doctrine and tactics had just as much of a hand in forging the German ships as their foreign competitors. Essential reading, along with Friedman's "Fighting the Great War at Sea," for anyone interested in learning about the Kaiserliche Marine capital ships without viewing them through the warped, carnival fun-house lens of largely Anglo-centric rehash in most history books, television shows and on-line videos. These were not wonder-weapons and they possessed strengths and weaknesses similar to every other fleet's capital ships.

A worthy addition to the library of anyone with a strong interest in the German Navy of the pre-World War One era. Focuses on the big ships - armored cruisers, battleships and battlecruisers - and their employment during the war. Not quite as much information as I'd hoped about the ships themselves but still useful in this regard. Lots of clear photos that I haven't seen elsewhere. A few sentence construction errors and contradictory passages left me shaking my head and seeking clarification but a good effort overall to provide information and background about the ships that opposed the Royal Navy.

Excellent over all coverage of the German fleet from the Victorian era leading to the end of WWI. It covers a lot of ground and a massive amount of research went into this volume. In almost all cases, it tells you the fate of the warships, engagements they were in, many details of the engagements, modifications and updates they received, and honestly, I don't understand any harsh reviews of this book. There are fantastic photos here, line drawings, and quite a bit of information I've not seen elsewhere. If you want a one-volume catch-all book that will give you a lot of information on Imperial Germany's capital ships, I would highly recommend this. I am sure there are books which specifically hone in on one particular ship or class of ship and they likely supply more information, but bang-for-buck, this is a bargain, and it will provide many hours of entertainment and it serves as an excellent reference piece. Very nicely done, very high printing quality, just an excellent book.

Excellent book! I thought that the most interesting parts were the discussions of the various alternative designs that were considered for each ship or class of ships. The fantasy or dream designs that were conducted just before the end of the war in 1918 were fun to read, not just because of the increase in ship size and armament compared to pre - 1914, but because of the aura of unreality that existed just before Germany requested an Armistice and the War ended. Germany has stopped work on several battleships and battlecruisers during 1917 and 1918, yet the Navy was still developing concept designs for future ships.

A much appreciated detailed overview of the development, building and use of the Berliner Kaiser's capital ships (Großkreuzer und Linienschiffe der Kaiserlichen Marine). Of particular interest is Dodson's detailing of the processes which underlay the German development of their large cruisers with relatively heavier armor, more extensive compartmentation and slightly smaller caliber main batteries than their British battle-cruiser contemporaries. The provision of details on the history of specific ships and classes as they passed through the stages of development, first-line usage and reassignments to support roles as they were superseded by newer designs makes this a useful overview and reference work.

I have read a couple of Aidan's egytology books, which were great. This is an excellent book that describes in just about the right amount of detail a range of shipsbuilt for the Kaiser's navy. I enjoyed the writing style, the pictures, the service history, and the design details.Excellent work Prof. Dodson!!

An excellent, but too short overview of the Imperial German Navy's larger vessels. Dodson provides a highly readable summary of the Empire's naval policy. The photos are excellent. The drawings are very good, but could have been larger. If the book was a bit longer with better drawings it would have easily deserved 5 stars.
