Review

“Unconscious patterns of communication create separation not only in our personal lives, they also perpetuate patterns of misunderstanding and violence that pervade our world. With clarity and great insight, Oren Jay Sofer offers teachings and practices that train us to speak and listen with presence, courage, and an open heart.”—Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge“Oren Jay Sofer offers us a brilliant intertwining of focused presence and artful engagement. Our work, family, and any other relationships will benefit from his guidance.”—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and Altered Traits“Full of practical exercises that develop powerful communication and mindfulness skills, this timely and engaging book shows us how caring, curiosity, and connection can transform people’s lives, even in the face of aggression.”—Susan Kaiser Greenland, author of Mindful Games and The Mindful Child“By the time we reach adulthood, most of us have learned to operate through such deeply engrained patterns of language and behavior that virtually all of our communication involves projection, assumption, and bias. No wonder we often feel so cut off and all alone! Mr. Sofer deftly weaves together his mindfulness practice and principles of Nonviolent Communication to help us learn how to find one another again. This is a powerful guidebook to thinking, speaking, and listening with authenticity and care. Bravo!”—Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Real Love   “This tremendous book addresses one of the biggest challenges in any relationship: how to combine heart with strength, compassion with assertiveness. Written with great warmth and clarity, it brings together well-researched principles, effective tools and suggestions, powerful experiential practices, and many examples. It is down-to-earth and completely accessible while also being so deep, even profound. If I had just one book to recommend about interpersonal communication, it would be this one.”—Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness“Oren Jay Sofer’s first book, Say What You Mean, is a helpful guide for speaking wisely and with love. It offers terrific tools and understandings that are critical to the art of communicating clearly and from the heart.”—Jack Kornfield, author of No Time Like the Present and Bringing Home the Dharma   “Meeting the enormous challenges of living in these times calls for an integration of inner practices of mindfulness with outer practices of communicating with honesty, vulnerability, strength, care, and empathy. Oren shows us a way to do just that.”—Miki Kashtan, Certified Nonviolent Communication Trainer and author of Spinning Threads of Radical Aliveness   “Oren Jay Sofer’s eloquent book Say What You Mean could just as well be titled Living What You Mean. Going beyond the surface level of communication, he describes our relational journey together in its inherent connections with how we behave, how we express, perceive, and meet the needs of ourselves and others, how we engage with difference and even conflict, how we negotiate love and anger—in sum, how to fully live this complex life. Sofer gives essential frameworks, perspectives, and skills for our shared humanity.”—Larry Yang, Buddhist teacher and author of Awakening Together: The Spiritual Practice of Inclusivity and Community   “Words have tremendous power—both to harm, and to heal. In Say What You Mean, Oren shares a 3-part process for communicating with mindfulness, clarity, and compassion, and creating more connection and understanding in our relationships. In these times of turbulence and conflict, we need this more than ever before.”—Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac , New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Cure and Unconventional Medicine“Detailed, thorough, and practical, Say What You Mean shines light on the ability of good communication to bring more compassion, kindness, and wisdom to our relationships.”—Foreword Reviews (starred review)“Through discussion and example, and supported by reflections and practices to ground the teaching, [Oren Jay Sofer] helps us explore our own habituated styles of not just communication, but of viewing the world, and how this impacts how we speak to one another, and, importantly, how we listen.”—Mindful Magazine

#6,160 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have read quite a bit about communication and also about mindfulness, so I wasn’t sure if this book had much to offer me. Turns out, I found this to be a valuable read. I found that the way Sofer clearly and expressively brought a number of ideas (mindfulness, Nonviolent Communication, and somatics) together was a joy. I have encountered the vast majority of the ideas before, but I treasure the way that Sofer brought these ideas together (ideas which are clearly related, but often not combined). I think this stands out above and beyond all the other communication books I have read and highly recommend this to anyone. I will be giving this out as a gift this year. The basic premise is that you have to be open to yourself and to others in order to be able to communicate in the truest and most connected way. This is a practical book and a deeply moving book at the same time, and, indeed, that is rather the point. Safer explains how the way we communicate affects our relationships, including our relationship with ourselves. Running on autopilot is not the best way to relate. We need to understand where we are coming from and where the other person is coming from. Using observations, emotions, needs and requests, we can focus on what is important.Since, at least at the time I am writing this, there is no “look inside” feature, here are the contents:PART 1: The First Step: Lead With Presence1: the center of our lives2: the power of mindfulness3: relational awarenessPART 2: The Second Step: Come From Curiosity and Care4: the blame game5: where are you coming from?6: don’t let the call dropPART 3: The Third Step: Focus On What Matters7: getting down to what matters8: emotional agility9: enhancing empathy and inner resilience10: how to raise an issue without starting a fight11: if you want something, ask for itPART 4: Bringing It All Together12: the flow of dialogue13: running the rapids14: conclusion: charting your courseHighly recommended! This book has the potential to bring much good to your life, IMHO.But that's JustMe

I am a veteran educator and rely on my communication skills to work with students, families and administrators. Delivering messages so they can be heard, and listening to others so they can feel seen and heard is a huge part of my professional existence. If you are interested in deepening your communication and apply mindfulness, self awareness (cognitive, affective and somatic) and concepts from Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication, this book is highly recommended. This is a VERY well written book by Oren Jay Sofer. The concepts (Oren refers to them as principles) and teachings are well structured and organized so that you are able to process the concepts multiple times during the book to really grasp and let them sink in. Oren shares contemplative practices that support the communication principles and at the end of the chapters, recaps with bullet points and with mini Q and A’s, further exploring the “what ifs” when applying the practice/principles. The list of Roadblocks to Communication was enlightening as there were some in there that didn’t appear as roadblocks, but looking deeply can get in the way of connecting with others. There is much wisdom and heart in the principles. His “pairing” of Practices (mindfulness related to help build presence, relational awareness, curiosity and care) to apply the principles in communication with others were helpful when I first started. It gave me a felt experience of what my body and mind needed to be when trying out the principles with others.I also enjoyed his direct and accessible style of writing about the concepts/principles, real life anecdotes (relatable, makes all of us Human!) and the meditation practices (guided online) that come with the book.A great book to read with a partner to embark on a journey to strengthen communication, for book clubs or summer reading for those who work closely with people and want to deepen connection with others through empathy and curiosity.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm a therapist who works with families and communication is literally my bread and butter. That being said I've read no other book that has broke down how to improve my own communication and explained how effective and heart centered communication works as well as this book has. It has concrete practices that I did with my girlfriend over the phone and in person. It helped our own communication get better and really opened up space for us to dive into the deep stuff. The book breaks down in a step by step fashion how to slowly engage in learning and practicing communication better. It opened my heart to really seeing how communication was developed for me at a young age and how I still carry old patterns of communication that were no longer needed. And through practicing some concrete practices I've noticed a huge difference in only a few weeks. If you're looking for a book around improving your own communication in an easy to read yet deeply insightful book, you've found it.

Oren is a good teacher but I think the book has an obsessive quality, he goes on and on. It is useful and many will benefit but after a while I didn't have the patience to read it. Others will probably appreciate all the detail about. I think the part on somatic experiencing is weak and Marshall Rosenberg's treatment is a better source for NVC

A very good book, full of humor, with funny scenes and truculent characters. No doubt you will salivate with these little culinary triumphs.

Little Culinary Triumphs is a book that will delight you. It is funny, and will leave you with the feeling of wanting to get up and hug someone. At least, I felt that way at the end of it. It is a whimsical book, it is also profound at times (rarely though), all in all it is the perfect book to be read when feeling down and about. The story takes place in Montmartre - multi-ethnic neighbourhood, where cultures meet, mingle, and sometimes collide as well. It is the place perfect for the senses - all of them actually, but more so when it comes to the taste buds. Sandrine, one of the central characters, works in an employment office, helping people find jobs. Under this surface is a world-class cook waiting to blossom and realize her dream of opening a restaurant. A bunch of weird and eccentric characters come together, thanks to Sandrine to open the restaurant - Antoine, an unemployed professor; the giant Senegalese, a magical chef, a psychologist, and a Kama Sutra expert as well. In all of this, is a newspaper magnate, upto no good at all.Pujol's prose is hilarious. It sneaks up quite cleverly on you. Till I reached page 75, I was of the opinion that this book isn't going anywhere at all. I was proved so wrong after that and I am so glad I was. The writing is crisp, delicious, and leaves you with this aftertaste that I just cannot describe. Yes, I used food adjectives, but that's what the book is all about anyway - food, food, and more food.I am a fan of Alison Anderson's translations. From Muriel Barbery to J.M.G. Le Clézio, her translations are spot-on. It is as though she gets the pulse of the original to the very last detail and as a reader, I am never left wanting more or wondering how it would've read in the original language. Little Culinary Triumphs is a novel that will make you laugh, chuckle, and understand a minuscule bubble of a universe of oddballs, who eventually grow to understand and sometimes even like each other.

Little Culinary Triumphs is a debut novel by Pascale Pujol – and it is an impressive one. It starts almost as a series of short stories, with diverse characters in different situations. Then, a while into the book, we return to the first story’s characters – and characters from one story start appearing in others, until we get to a place where they all come together and everything makes sense as the conclusion approaches. It is cleverly worked. We have Sandrine who works as an interviewer in a local government unemployment office – but who harbours a desire to run a restaurant. She is an excellent cook. We have Antoine – one of her clients – a former teacher, who is desperate to stay unemployed, but who she persuades to train as a chef. He is totally into green produce and saving the planet (his commitment is why he has fallen out with former employers). He lives in a hostel for unemployed men, where two of the inhabitants are very good cooks indeed (one specialises in Tamil cuisine, and one in Senegalise cuisine). The hostel is under threat, and about to be sold to a property developer. Then, a separate thread, there is Marcel who runs a magazine company, along with his spendthrift and not overly bright son (and his much brighter ‘child minder’, Luc) – sales are declining, a rival publication has launched successfully, and something needs to be done to save the company. And, yet another thread, there is a not terribly moral estate agent, Samuel, who impacts the lives of several of the characters in the book – and keeps on appearing. It then turns out that Marcel had an affair with Sandrine’s mother-in-law many, many years ago… Marcel is persuaded to to take on Sandrine’s children for work experience, and new ideas for his company start to flow. Two of the ‘short stories’ merge…All we need now is for everyone to come together to foil the plans of the property developer intent on acquiring the hostel. And they do.Multi-ethnic Montmartre is a key character in Little Culinary Triumphs. All the action is set in the area… and it comes through loud and clear. It is a part of Paris that never fails to enthral.Little Culinary Triumphs is a book that brings together many strands of humanity into a definitely heartwarming story. Recommended.

This slim volume comprises a series of brief visits with a set of characters who could each boast their own novel. Set in Montmartre, it focuses on Sandrine and her effort to open a restaurant. Pujol touches on a variety of current issues (especially for the French). It's funny in spots and perhaps because it's topical for Paris (but not necessarily for the US) went over my head in others. Regardless, it was a good fast read and a nice introduction to a French author. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

All Too Human: A Political Education, by George Stephanopoulos

Amazon.com Review

A Rhodes scholar with a healthy ego, the young idealist George Stephanopoulos thought he was ready for the obscure governor of Arkansas. But soon after he signed on as his presidential-campaign manager, the odds of Clinton's triumph soared, and so did the chance for calamity via Gennifer Flowers and other scandals. Stephanopoulos scrambled behind the scenes, squelching rumors, spinning major news organizations, artfully knifing Clinton rivals, and second-guessing public opinion--lessons that would serve him well when Clinton won. For the next four years, Stephanopoulos was a few feet from the president, advising him on everything from Iraq and Waco to gays in the military and Paula Jones. More than any book yet--including Monica Lewinsky's--Stephanopoulos's memoir reveals what went on in the scary, occasionally hilarious world backstage at the White House. He casts stark light on characters from Yeltsin, "like a boiled potato slathered in sour cream," to the author's nemesis Dick Morris, whom he depicts bellowing for Clinton to bomb Bosnia. And nobody who's talking knows as well as Stephanopoulos the most passionate, mystifying affair of all, between Bill and Hillary. But years of backroom scheming, screaming, and relentless political attacks took a toll. Stephanopoulos's face erupted in hives; he grew a beard. Slammed by clinical depression, he dangerously delayed medical attention, fearing the story might leak. This memoir could've been titled Prisoner of Spin. Written with the jittery cadence of a bookie, All Too Human is a lively look at the complex and motley cast of characters who rule the world. --Rebekah Warren

From Library Journal

National fame came early to Stephanopoulos, who by age 31 was President Clintons first director of communications until he was promoted to the vaguely defined, vulnerable position of senior advisor. He views Clinton as the best politician he has ever known, who could have accomplished much more if he were a better person. First Lady Hillary Clinton is portrayed as fiercely loyal and at times inflexible and ambitious. Ultimately, Stephanopolous fell out of favor for being a traditional liberal in an administration that increasingly believed that the era of big government was dead and also because he was a reputed news leaker, a charge he denies. The strengths of the book are also its weaknesses. An engaging, self-deprecating style, similar to that of Robert Reich, Clintons first secretary of labor (Locked in the Cabinet, LJ 4/1/97), is marred by an overabundance of italicized comments representing rejoinders that could have been used with devastating effect in confrontations but werent. A forthright honesty about his own faults dissolves into self-pity during an extended section on his fights with his major political foe, Dick Morris, the pollster who was brought on board to improve Clintons image but departed when his telephone antics with a prostitute were discovered. Stephanopoulos resigned at the end of the first term and recently condemned the Lewinsky affair as Clintons abandonment of presidential policies and more than a few trusted advisors in order to save himself. Overall, a fascinating if controversial insiders account of life inside the Clinton pressure cooker administration during its early years. George Stephanopoulos is the Patti Boyd of politics, that is Boyd inspired great songs such as George Harrison's Something and Eric Clapton's Layla (amongst others) while Stephanopoulos is said to be basis for great characters in Primary Colors and The West Wing.Stephanopoulos writes well (as I guess you would expect he is a Rhodes' Scholar, communications professional and is as sharp as a tack) and is an engaging protagonist. Some of his colourful descriptions "a sausage of a man" made me chuckle. What is also great is that he doesn't pretend that he is without fault, which gives the impression that he is being candid. He also gives a nuanced picture of people, sometimes he has contempt, other times he is complimentary.

Excellent read. This book gave such an honest and unbiased look into the workings of the White House under the Clinton administration. This is not a "gossip fest." It is a truly well written, classy book that Mr. Stephanopoulos wrote to tell of his years working closely with President Clinton. He gives credit where credit is due, but doesn't fail to tell about all of the shortcomings that President Clinton had.

Such a well written, informative, and amazing story. I couldn't put the book down it was so interesting. George was just as hard on himself than he was others - insightful is a better word. He does take responsibility! Too bad Clinton never really could until he had to! Still, Clinton accomplished so much during his years in the White House and I give thanks to George for helping me be able to see both sides of his years and accomplishments of this president.

In 1999 George Stephanopoulos decided the public would be interested in his lengthy memoir. I waited eleven years to read it, bought it used, discovered it to be well-written, funny, candid, and now timely, as we compare the Bush and Obama administrations in 2010.After the predictable story of his birth, Greek heritage, teen years, college and his increasing ambition to be "somebody"; the book comes alive with details of his one year on the campaign trail with Bill and Hillary Clinton at the tender age of thirty. He made himself so indispensable to the campaign(his opinion) by catering to the Clintons and expressing loyalty in unique ways; so his reward was a job in the White House where he spent four years at their beck and call. He became press secretary, then advisor, confidant, and friend, until......George's analysis of the Clinton years and his complete devotion to the Clintons which led to clinical depression; his fear of competition (Dick Morris and others) and fear of failure, is, in essence, what makes this self-serving memoir so readable. His energy was fueled by power and in the end, he became "the enemy". Accused of leaking stories, given the silent treatment by the Clintons, he resigns and returns to a more normal life with an unbelievable tale to tell the voting public.Presently, the author is an anchor on Good Morning America, on his way again to higher ambitions, but now more mature and patient as both a husband and father. In this memoir, he disparages himself often, details his mistakes, appears to be naive and humble at times and also resorts to self-pity. He also makes many familiar names, such as Al Gore, more well-known, maybe not as they want to be.Apparently the Clintons took his youth and loyalty for granted but kept him on with deep reservations, only to be shocked later with this telling book! It is a political education taking us back to the Clinton years and leaving the reader with impressions to think about seriously.

I really enjoyed the book, well-written, insightful. I thought your author did and excellent job of being fair while writing about a very controversial time in our history. Is deep affection and respect for Clinton came through, while he was able to be very honest and fair about his assessment of his character.

Stephanopolous has indeed smacked Clinton hard with this tell-almost-all tome, and his future credibility with employers -- if there is anything to karma -- will suffer. However, given Clinton's staggeringly consistent ability to tell lie after lie after lie, I'm happy to watch a former staffer or two who feels that their time was not well spent by ardently and repeatedly defending a dishonest man.I am a former campaign staffer and a former administration worker bee -- neither at GS' level -- but his detailing of the trials of those endeavors ring very true, are entertaining, and well crafted. He's a good writer, he's as hard on himself as he is on others (harder, perhaps), and he seems to have written something that the much-vaunted Clinton attack team (that GS once staffed) hasn't been able to knock down. Remember when Robert Reich wrote Locked In The Cabinet? The Clintonites did a great job of tearing apart several of his recollections, casting doubt on his story of a President eager to discard his values. This hasn't happened here. It probably won't. This rings true. Laced with betrayal, but true.Nicely done, George.

I was pleasantly surprised that George Stephanopoulos inserts his uncensored thoughts about his upward progress on the political ladder. He doesn't seem to hesitate to reveal his unflattering character traits which had the ironic effect of making this reader appreciate his unassuming tv personality. Highly entertaining to politicos of any party.

Today too many people who are fixated on "fixing the Presidency' don't really seem to have a clue how the organization and process works, and that sadly applies to would-be candidates. This is a superb book written with insight from inside the West Wing few can match. Stories and reflections add substantially to the simple coverage of factual mechanics of the White House and the White House press management process.

This is a different kind of biography. The author says part of the idea of writing the book was show a different side of Ken Stabler than the womanizing, heavy drinking, partying Stabler of his youth through his NFL playing career. He wanted to show the side of Ken Stabler that genuinely care about people, including his teammates, his kids, and even his ex-wives.So we have three sides of Ken Stabler.First, the rebellious, woman loving (in many ways), and partier Ken Stabler of his youth through his football career. Stabler was not only upfront about his partying ways, he kind of bragged about it. And he embraced the bad boy image of the Oakland Raiders. It is hard for me to believe that Bear Bryant had two of the most iconic rebel rousing athletes of their day at the University of Alabama in both Joe Namath followed by Ken Stabler. Both got into deep trouble with Bear Bryant because of their wayward ways and eventually rehabilitated themselves with him. Also interesting, both love the Bear and it seems the Bear deeply cared about them too. Stabler continued his fun loving ways with the Raiders, having a lot of fun along the way.Second, there is the athlete Ken Stabler. In some ways that goes hand in hand with the rebelliousness as an average athlete probably just doesn’t get away what Stabler did in college and the pros. He was obviously and outstanding athlete who eventually won a Super Bowl ring and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Here the author makes a strong case for Stabler as a Hall of Famer. Does he belong in the Hall of Fame? He was certainly a great leader on the football field and the right one for the Raiders. I think he does belong partly because you couldn’t think of the NFL in the 1970’s without Stabler. He was a gunslinger and he won a Super Bowl. But, he also had a woeful number of interceptions. He had a touchdown to interception ratio of of .87. But his statistics easily stack up against other Hall of Fame quarterbacks of his error. Terry Bradshaw, who’s career almost parallels Stabler’s, had statistics that closely mirror that of Stabler and Stabler has a better career passer rating than Bradshaw. So yes, he belongs.Third there is the empathic Ken Stabler who cared for his teammates, his family, his kids and his friends. He was, by all accounts, a great father to his kids even after his divorces and even more so after he retired from football and had more time with them. He stood up for his teammates and while it might sound odd now, was colorblind. He exhibited traits, even at the University of Alabama, where he treated all equally regardless of race. And in his later years he chilled out and relaxed with family and his grandkids.Stabler had a grand life and this biography does him justice.

Read the book. A toddler could have written more compelling stories. If I am not mistaken, the author has written for Bleacher Report which explains everything. Seriously, do not waste your time with this book. While there are some cool stories, it doesn't dive into anything. It skims the surface and then on to the next chapter.

This book is terribly written. Facts were not checked (Raiders never could have played the Dolphins in the Super Bowl), grammar is horrid, sentence structure is at times non-existent.

I was 20 in1970 when I first became a Ken Stabler fan. My young wife and I attended a Raiders game against the 49ers at Kezar Stadium and was fascinated by Stabler talking with George Blanda on the sidelines as each awaited their turn at QB while DarylLomonica threw bombs away. When he got his chance Snake made the most of it. Still my favorite Rallyider.

Very little insight Ingrid text. The narrative style is sloppy and it's mostly an unapologetic gushing hero worship. There are several errors and stories that are incomplete. This works as neither a good history of Madden's Raiders, but isn't a very good telling of Stabler. If you're really interested in learning about Stabler, search out his biogrophy, Snake. It's much better.

This has to be the worst book I've ever read. The editor should be ashamed. Simplistic. Repetitive. And even for this Snake fan, simply horrid jock-sniffing.

As a true Silver & Black Raider fan from their inception… and an original PSL season ticket holder upon their journey back to Oakland… I’ve seen and cheered them all on. But the one player… above… and…. beyond… them all… who I idolized on AND off the field… was the one… and only… the inimitable “Snake”! The coolest man on the field… even with seconds remaining… in game after game… and the outcome on the line… every Raider looked to… believed in… and followed… the now *LONG-OVER-DUE-HALL-OF-FAMER*… KEN “THE SNAKE” STABLER!... The Snake was also the coolest man in every bar in town… and I idolized him for that too!Potential readers… who are reading this review… please believe me… that my feelings for “The Snake”… will not influence my review of the quality of the book. First let me point out that this is a short book… that if you take away the bibliography/sources pages is only 227 pages… and if you take away the three pages (two blank and one wasted with simply a small title) between each of the four “sub-book” dividers… and it’s even twelve pages less than that. There are about five pages (an estimate) telling about Stabler’s ancestry dating back to the 1600’s and 1700’s… that I thought would never end… and seemed like a hundred pages. Now that I got those two things out of the way… everything else is… UNBELIEVABLE!!Being Kenny’s life and career is history… much of what is written… has been written before…. (and duly noted)… but interspersed… are many personal interviews and discussions directly with the author. The personal admiration for Stabler by the author… is not only informative… but to me highly admirable. In my opinion… it’s that very combination of history… and true heartbeat… that make *this-book-on-this-subject-at-this-time* even more impactful and enjoyable. Poor Kenny… and his lifelong fans… which include me AND the author. The author could be me or many other fans… that have stood at bars… at ballgames… in airports… at the Thanksgiving dinner table… and argued… and/or simply proclaimed… THAT KEN STABLER SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE HALL OF FAME DECADES AGO!The author covers all the bases including the saga of Stabler’s Father Slim… who did not come home from World War II… unscathed. In those days… there was no PTSD… you either had scars that you can see… missing appendages… or you didn’t get special care. Slim’s inner ticking time bomb… when mixed with alcohol.. affected the entire Stabler family for life. The author does a wonderful job extrapolating out… why “The Snake” became who he was… on and off the field. Kenny was a great high school baseball pitcher as well as a great football player. In fact Stabler was the only high school pitcher to ever beat future baseball Hall of Famer Don Sutton. “The Snake” struck out 16 batters in that game compared to Sutton’s 14. From there to the University of Alabama… and the special relationship… again… on and off the field… with the legendary Bear Bryant. There are some great heartfelt stories from that time period… and of course later on… there’s the special relationship with Hall of Fame Raider coach John Madden.Of course no story of Stabler or the all-time classic Silver and Black teams that Stabler spearheaded… could leave out the literal all-time-all-time… classic… plays and games… such as THE HOLY ROLLER… THE GHOST TO THE POST… THE IMMACULATE RECEPTION… **OR AS MANY RAIDERS AND FANS CALL IT… “THE IMMACULATE DECEPTION”… but what true Raider… or simply true old-school football fans… will be impressed with… is among other things… that Stabler called his own plays… every player looked up to him… and would follow him to hell and back… that he was cooler and calmer than the coach with the game on the line. The utter respect that opposing players had for him is legendary… which has made it even more disdainful… that “The Snake” didn’t get into the Hall of Fame until after he died. After one game against the Bears in which… “he was picked up and tossed on his head. When he awoke, he was helped off the field, only to return in time to help the Raiders win. After the game, the Bears’ Walter Payton approached Snake as he was walking off the field, and then came one of those small but powerful moments that often go unnoticed. “YOU’RE SUCH A GREAT FIGHTER,” PAYTON TOLD SNAKE, “IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE ON THE SAME FIELD AS YOU.”Perhaps the greatest accomplishment by the author Mike Freeman in this book is showing without a shadow of doubt… how much “The Snake” loved football. Whether he just got done studying his playbook by the light of a jukebox… whether he only had an hour of sleep… he was always ready to win on that football field. Two quotes from this book that I will highlight here… show the range of Stabler’s wit and true emotions…One year the Raiders were in the Super Bowl that was played in Pasadena, California… during Super Bowl week… he (Stabler) paid a visit to the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles and he said… “Just went to share a few thoughts about football with some of the librarians there!”And… “A friend of Stabler’s once read him a quote from writer and social activist Jack London: “I would rather be a meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them, I shall use my time.”“What does that mean to you?” Stabler was asked.“He thought and contemplated. Seconds passed.”………. “THROW DEEP,” He said.To me… that says it all! Rest in peace… My Brother… thanks for all the Silver and Black memories.Rick “SHAQ” Goldstein

Really enjoyed this book. Mike brings inside knowledge and insight to one of the most colorful, influential and truly great players in NFL history. His change of life is extremely well chronicled.
