First a clarification: While the translation is marketed as 'an early Harry Hole case' Cockroaches is the second Hole novel by Mr Nesbo.Second the answer to: Is it worth going backwards through time to read this one?Yes indeed.Sent to Thailand in the hopes of being too drunk to solve a murder too sensitive to be solved, Harry indeed finds himself drunk, sweating, and out of his depth in Bangkok. The novel balances Harry's personal life, own demons and the murder mystery well. Focusing mostly on the action and intrigue (and some the most intense violence read by this reader for a while) with just enough contact with 'Sis' and Harry's father to tug at heart strings and drive Harry onward.My only beef is that the epilogue is a little light - with so much carnage in this story one wants a little more loose end tying and (as far as I can recall) Redbreast does not confront these at all (aside from searing criticisms from various colleagues which is a common feature of Hole novels)In short, while many may be worried that Cockroaches won't sit well with them after being further through the series, Harry's trip to Thailand has an almost episodic feel to it that prevents discombobulation from the timeline jumping. Also unlike some of the more dry Hole plots, Cockroaches mixes business with pleasure and mayhem in perfect balance.Recommended.

Jo Nesbo has a way of gripping the reader as he weaves his complex stories. The plot can become confusing and takes some concentration by the reader but he does weave all the pieces together. The red herrings keep the reader on their toes. The characters are relatable but his death counts are high. I hate becoming interested in characters only to suffer their loss. There a a couple of scenes with graphic violence but it is at a minimum.I wish there had been a little more clarification and wrap up at the end of the book. The major points were covered but for as complex as the story was, I think it merited a bit more depth at the end.The author takes us to exotic settings so we learn a little about the world as we become invested in the characters. This time we got to experience a bit of Thailand with a glimpse at their sex industry. I found the book hard to put down and got very little sleep a couple of nights when I should have slept before reading.

I've read all of the Harry Hole books, except the latest, which is in my queue, but unread so far. This is a "new" book in the sense that it has been recently translated, but it is actually the second book in the Harry Hole series. I've written other reviews of Mr. Nesbo's books, and what I said in them applies here, too. For those of you unfamiliar with the books about Harry, he's an Oslo, Norway, police detective who is quite literally a mess, emotionally and otherwise. He's an alcoholic. He's plagued by bad memories, failed relationships, dead people he cared about, etc. He's unconventional, somewhat anti-social, a festering sore for most of his superiors and some of his cohorts in the police force, but, on the other hand, he's a brilliant detective, who solves the cases no one else can. Nesbo's typical story (and this applies here) is to present you with a difficult mystery that Harry seems to solve, but then solves again in a different way, catching the real bad guy in the end. Nesbo is simply a brilliant story-teller, and, as unheroic as Harry is, one is always rooting for him in his internal and external battles. If you enjoy mysteries or what Amazon calls "police procedurals," and haven't read any of Nesbo, read one of his Harry books. Amazon doesn't have enough stars to do any of them justice.

He has a strange yet intriguingly dichotomous personality that I find alluring. He's exceedingly clever and Holmes level observant. In this one he noticed a belt hole. A BELT HOLE FFS! Who notices that? AND figures out the significance of it?Harry Hole, that's who. He's like a criminal savant or something.The secondary characters always seem to add to the narrative in a multitude of ways and I love how Harry connects to people.Recommend to crime drama fans.Trigger warning for mentions of pedophilia.

The author's work has become popular thorough the combination of mystery, suspense and the damaged, soulful protagonist. This work was written when the author was still creating the strong points that he would later perfect. In Bangkok, the Swedish ambassador has been found murdered in a brothel. Harry Hole is dispatched to help the Thai police investigate and deep-six the investigation. The Thai backdrop is interesting and there is some intrigue and suspense, but too many of the characters are weird beyond belief. Worse, the story meanders during the middle park of the book. The novel is readable and interesting at times, but fans will be disappointed.

In this novel, Joe Nesbo places his protagonist, Detective Harry Hole in Bangkok, Thailand where he is sent to investigate the brutal murder of the Norwegian ambassador found stabbed in a seedy motel. As Harry begins his investigation, he notices the swarm of cockroaches crawling everywhere he goes. Soon, the reader realizes the symbolism of the cockroaches take on a three tiered significance. There are the physical cockroaches ever present in the book. Then, the reader realizes the cockroaches symbolize the decadence and criminality of the Norwegian expatriates in Thailand and finally, at he cockroaches swirling in Harry's fragile mind. When we leave the book Harry is trying to silence his own demons in the stillness of the opium pipe.

This has been my favorite book now for a couple of months, and I finally had to write a review that disagrees with the previous negative ones. There's no nice way to say this, but maybe there is a new money-old money difference in perception here. What I see in the book is one gorgeous and highly livable room after another. Lively, vibrant, personal and comfortable homes obviously used by real people. What I didn't expect was that I would pick up as many decorating ideas for my own home as I did.

A must-have book for anyone who loves beautiful interiors. If you are an interior designer, or are looking for a gift for someone who loves to design - this is it! Stunning photographs enhance the work of the talented designers featured in this enjoyable and useful book.

Another reviewer said the book was not like Traditional Homes magazine. I disagree. This book is very much like the magazine. I enjoy the stories about the interior designers and the pictures of interesting homes that they have decorated. Several friends have seen the book on our coffeetable, so I plan to give several books for upcoming holiday gifts. A lovely gift book because it is large, colorful, and beautifully bound.

I loved reading about these top designers and seeing their work. If you love Traditional Home magazine, you'll love the book. It's not how-to book but an interesting "read" and a chance to tour some beautiful homes. It's a little like going to a desiginer showhouse. You'll come away with lots of ideas for your own home. I did.

I truly enjoyed the beautiful photos in this book. Lots of ideas and details in the photos. It would be hard for you NOT to pick up some ideas for your own home---just from looking at the photos. Well done!

I had checked this book out of the library and loved it so much that I purchased it I love it even more now that I own it

I found this book to be extremely boring. While the pictures were done well, the content was way too traditional and museum-like. The rooms didn't look like anyone could live in them, and that the furniture ought to be slipcovered in plastic like some of our Grandparents homes.

I subscribe to Traditional Home magazine and have purchased their other books. Signature Style was a terrible disappointment. It lacks the interesting, informative style for which they are known. Pictures and text are below par. Gives you the feeling this was done by some other entity who dashed it off without much thought. Save your money.
