What is it that makes Jesus radically different from other gods?Ravi Zacharias’ thought-provoking book should be read by those who are wondering why they should accept Christianity over and against any other religion, as well as for Christians who desire to know how to better communicate the truths of the Gospel to those of other faiths. JESUS AMONG OTHER GODS provides an informative overview (but not an exhaustive study) of eastern religions including Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. It will give readers a starting point for engaging those of other faiths, by going deeper into human existential questions. For example, we must consider that every world-view – not just Christianity’s – must give an explanation or an answer for evil and suffering. As Ravi Zacharias explains, “Either evil categorically does not exist, as the atheist avows, or evil is “not ultimately real evil” as the pantheist claims, or evil is most coherently explained by the Christian view of God and His purposes in creation.”Having argued for the exclusivity of religious truth claims, Zacharias then examines the major world religions, showing how they fail to answer the fundamental questions of life, then presents a strong argument for Christ - He is who He claimed He was - the way, the truth and the life. Only through the acceptance of these exclusive claims could we make sense of life and find salvation. All religions cannot be right, because they fundamentally contradict one another. Some say religions are fundamentally the same but superficially different – that’s false. They may be superficially the same but fundamentally different. As the author states “All religions are not the same. All religions do not point to God. All religions do not say that all religions are the same. At the heart of every religion is an uncompromising commitment to a particular way of defining who God is or is not and accordingly, of defining life’s purposes.”The author’s defense of Christianity is plainly aimed at the Christian reader, but it is so deep and challenging that it compelled me to address many questions that I had never considered before.

This was not a quick and easy read. Although a number of the thoughts and concepts in this book have been expressed by Ravi in his talks, I still found myself having to go back and reread sections to understand them. I think I could read this book twice more and still get new perspective. What I really appreciate about this book is the approach Ravi takes. This is an argument for believing in Jesus Christ. He does this by contrasting Jesus and Christian teaching with the leaders and teachings of Islam, Buddism, and Hinduism. Atheism is also contrasted, but presented as it claims to be, a view of life and the universe without a God. He does this rather respectfully, I believe presenting the teachings and commenting on the logistics of the teachings rather than simply expressing emotional blasts like a sports fan of his team's rival.Mostly I appreciate that Ravi thinks and he calls the reader to think. Not just to take someone's word, or to glance at the surface to see if it looks good, but to look deeper and to see where such a teaching or philosophy leads. Further, he calls Christians to see the teaching of Jesus from the perspective of Jews in the first century rather than interpreting them from a 21st century perspective by default. This book has definitely challenged me and has brought fresh thoughts and perspectives to my mind. So why four stars and not five? I am trying to refine my ratings to be more accurate in my thoughts of them and the impact they have on me rather than a response to the high of having finished a book. This is a really good book. Right now it is not one I would consider being of one of the most important I've read.

In our modern world we are constantly bombarded by the mantra that all religions are the same and that no one of them can be the truth; that the truth is subjective. This book will help solidify the honest believing Christian that the message of Christ and true Christianity is the only hope for mankind. There is no condemnation of others who do not accept the Christian faith, in fact, Mr Zacharias encourages acceptance of all who practice other faiths, while at the same time adhering to the Biblical principal that Christ is truly the only way to God, and therefore the only way to true and lasting peace. Beautifully written and easy to follow with many stories and quotes from other writers, this book should be on every serious Christian's shelf, if only to remind us regularly that, as Christ Himself said, "I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by Me."

I found Ravi Zacharias's book to be insightful, flawlessly conceived and very logically argued. It is a delight to read apologetics that are so astutely presented! I highly recommend this author and plan to read every book of his I can find! This is the second of his books I've read and I'm not stopping until they've all been absorbed, enjoyed, appreciated and celebrated! I now have three favorite authors: C.S. Lewis, Pastor Joseph Prince and Ravi Zacharias!Read this book!

#67,140 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is really not an introductory magical text.In spite of the author's warnings that readers with prior magical experience might have to unlearn a lot while studying his books (which is true!), I don't think very many beginners would find themselves well-served to rely on this book as an introduction. Initiation into Hermetics is a dense book that frequently, actually, assumes that the reader already has some background in magic. This book is not a history lesson. This book is not a comprehensive overview of the subject of hermetics. This book is not just a preparation for more serious work - it IS the more serious work, for those who are prepared. The author explains many things in depth, but much of it will sound like nonsense to a magical novice. It takes a little foreknowledge and practice to properly navigate Bardon's idiosyncrasies and outdated science (although not as much as it takes to interpret even the most lucid writings of Aleister Crowley, or any pre-20th century occultist), and he devotes very little time to joking, bragging, or making lurid claims. Less mature occultists will quickly become frustrated and/or bored. This newer translation is improved, but some passages are still difficult to decipher. There are good reasons for why there is a market for supplemental material! The book starts with a whirlwind "Theory" section, at the end of which the author insists that anybody wishing to embark on the practical exercises (which comprise the bulk of the text) must first review and meditate and reflect until they fully grasp all of the theory. The process could take years, he says! Yeah, well, that was in 1956, and it's 2015 now, and there are many effective ways for a novice to gain a lot of mystical insight and experience very quickly. Buy yourself a copy of Modern Magick, or Liber Null if you're cheap, and magic yourself silly, kid. You would just roll your eyes at Bardon's warnings and claims, because they would sound outrageous to you right now. You would not treat this book with the proper respect. That's okay. You do not know any better yet. Come back when you've got a few bruises, when you've developed a healthy fear of your own power, when you need a real teacher but you don't want to join a cult. And be ready to unlearn a lot.For you who are already on a self-directed mystical path and who have never found complete satisfaction in all of your wanderings, congratulations. This is what you have been looking for.All of the magical texts you have read until now - all of the legitimate ones, at least - have basically handed you a series of increasingly deadly firearms. The authors of these books have instructed you to juggle all of these firearms, and they have told you to try to shoot and hit moving targets while you continue to juggle the entire armful. They have assured you that all of the old gun-juggling books, the ones that traditionally warned readers about the severe dangers of juggling guns, were just written by paranoid people and elitists, and you definitely probably maybe won't shoot your own face off.You have realized this by now. You have stopped being stupid. Magic isn't a toy. Magic is an armful of loaded guns. And you aren't even thoroughly educated in the care and maintenance of a simple pistol yet.Initiation into Hermetics is not an introduction, it is an initiation. It will break you down to square one and build you back up as a true magician, and it will not always hold your hand along the way. Because Franz Bardon respects you. Franz Bardon knows that you can figure a lot out on your own. Franz Bardon sits down with you and plainly says, "Here are the universal, fundamental building blocks of magic. Here is what they are, here is how they work. Here is a fantastic, structured way to completely master these fundamentals. And as you master them, you can invent countless creative new ways to apply them. Here are some examples. BE CAREFUL."Initiation into Hermetics is a ruthlessly pragmatic and technical book about utterly mastering the four/five primal elements in both understanding and practice. This involves a variety of intensive mental exercises. There are no elaborate rituals - Bardon's firm assertion is that rituals constitute an advanced form of magic, and in the hands of novices they amount to simple acts of ignorant sorcery, achieving nothing better than that which is achievable through simple applications of elemental mastery. His second book is about ritual magic, but he insists that students must painstakingly master the primal elements and their own consciousness, in accordance with the guidelines in Initiation into Hermetics, before attempting advanced work. The author is not the most well-spoken, at least in the English edition. He uses many of his own proprietary terms, and some of the word choices - whether the fault of the author or the translator, I can't say - can be confusing until you adapt to them. There are things that he over-explains, and there are things that you will find yourself wishing he would explain more thoroughly. All of this is excusable, in my opinion, because the end result is still the greatest occult text I've ever read.

I have been a serious student and practitioner of the occult for close to 40 years. In that time I have studied and been initiated into a multitude of different practices from Wicca to Palo Mayombe. I must say in all truth and honesty, this tome is by far (for the mind and soul that is both advanced and ready for such knowledge) the most powerful and enlightening one of it's kind. One of the major problems, in my opinion is that most individuals want it quick and easy. So many ancient and modern grimoires offer so much for so little; that we expect this is how it should be in all cases. Most occult books are often quite similar to mundane recipe books, you simply follow the steps and voila instant success!! It is no wonder why so many people who start on this magickal path last but a short time. Many neophytes either find zero success, or worst yet they find themselves way over their heads. Franz Bardon's work is without a doubt a true masterpiece. I know of over 40 individuals who have gone through the book from beginning to end and worked through the exercises (over the years I have run more than a few occult book clubs where we worked through different grimoires)and I can tell you that not one failed to enhance their abilities and overall understanding of nature of reality ten fold. The only issue/problem (more of a cost to participate than a true issue or problem) is that it takes and incredible amount of time and effort. It took my first group about 1 1/2 year of almost daily study to get through all the material properly, (mind you, we were all advanced practitioners and had at least 20 years of serious study and training prior to starting IIH.) unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) very few people have that kind of focus and determination. I will refrain from mentioning the abilities of manifestation and pure cosmic gnosis that we received along the way, culminating with a boon in power that I thought with all my years of serious study, was strictly reserved for fantasy novels. Like most pursuits in life, you tend to get out of it, what you put into it, and of course everything is not for everybody. To those who did NOT like this tome, or it did not resonate with you, no problem. Your path to happiness and enlightenment, be it magickal or mundane is out there waiting for you.I just wanted to share a little of my experience with this hermetic path, in hopes that it might inspire someone to keep at it, if and when you start to have doubts or it seems overwhelming. The rewards I assure you are beyond most peoples true comprehension. Good luck to all!!

As others have mentioned this is the most important book for a beginner looking to understand or practice western magick.. in fact if you focused entirely on this system alone youd get much further than most of the other western esotericists who have a library full of books! Coming from an intense study of eastern methods of spiritual cultivation I, at first, didnt see the draw to western systems at all. They did not seem to go nearly as deep and most people interested were just looking to enlargen their ego's.. and most of the other stuff i read was ritual magick and stuff, which does not do anything if you dont have your mind under control and your will actually trained... bardon goes and explains these all important foundational excercises, which to my suprise, were alot similar to the eastern methods i had already been training in... he goes on to show how deep and profound hermetics actually is, as well as how to use this knowledge for practical purposes... having read some other reputable authors and magicians coming from the hermetic order of the golden dawn, i would have to say Bardon's system is much closer to real hermetics than those other guys.. so again for any curious person who may wish to study more into real hermetics this is the only book you SHOULD buy. Even if your interest lies in the eloborate ceremonial magick of other orders you will do well to study this system as a foundation. And it is so cheap compared to some of those other books. Anyways hope someone finds benefit in this review

I found this book to be very interesting, informative and well written. It covers the Arab Conquest of the Sasanian Persian Empire and part of the Byzantine Empire, covering the 7th and 8th centuries AD. It covers :· The military aspects of the invasion and some of the principal battles, with an emphasis on the idea that the conquest was not instantaneous, but rather took decades.· The Arab invasion is portrayed as not being motivated by religious factors, but more for plunder than for converting people. There was no initial impetus for converting the defeated people; in fact the opposite was the case, with a resistance to conversion.· The book discusses the nature of the Arab army and the fact that it was not solely composed of Moslems, but also contained Christian and Jewish tribes.· The book discusses the nature of the Islamic society that the invasion produced and the influence of Persia on the nature of Islam.I liked the book and found that is provided an interesting interpretation of this critical aspect of the history of the Middle East, Central Asia, the Caucuses and the West in general.

This well written and extremely insightful book deserves a wide readership. It places the Arab conquests in a historical context second to none and provides a clear and concise description of the peoples and events that transpired. It fills an information void with regard to the Late Antique world as seen from the Arab side. The conquests and aftermaths are shown in human terms rather than from a strictly religious point of view. The role of religion is never dismissed or downplayed but is held in a perspective so that the events can be more easily understood in human terms. This is especially gratifying for those of us that are well versed in Byzantine and Persian history. Those tumultuous times can now be more readily viewed and understood on their own terms. There is something to be said for a balanced multi-perspective presentation and 'In God's Path' does just that-admirably so. The events may have occurred a long time ago but the repercussions are as recent as today's headlines. This should be a 'must read' book especially for Westerners that have a poor understanding of the histories of South West Asia in general and the Arabs in particular.

Although relatively short, this book provides an excellent short history of the early expansion of the Arab/Muslim Empire. The author makes a number of valuable insights into the emergence of the Umayyad and Abassid empires. His use of available sources is admirable, and his conclusions flow logically from his sourcing. This is the sort of work that can create a lot of argument among specialists, but provides a much more nuanced picture of early Islamic history. Very recommended.

I looked for a way to give a feedback on audible books to amazon.com, and found no other way to do it other than leaving a feedback on this book... I think audible book owners should be granted the right to view the maps and figures of the bought book online, or have an option to give a small fee to buy the kindle version completely. Especially history books without the maps are really hard to understand and from a customer point of view, bad purchases. Narration goes like "as seen in map 4.2, they turned eastwards then northwards and reached Samarkand" One needs to go home and see the map immediately... Great book on the battles and politics of the Late Antiquity of the Muslim lands. Everyone interested in the history of Islam or the Middle East should read this book. We are all so wrapped up in the Middle East, and we are affected by its history every day, we need to understand what that history was and how it has shaped our world. Great read.

A widely shared impression is that, immediately on conversion to Islam, Arabs swept across the Persian and Roman empires, wielding the sword as alien invaders. This study demonstrates that most elements in this story are false or at best simplifications. The Arabs in the heartland of Islam were partly Romanised, familiar with military service. People other than Arabs joined the conquerors, who also fought each other and used negotiation as well as violence in their conquests, which took place over an extended period.

As for me very good explanation of the Arabs sucess in conquering neighboors and installing an empire but it is lack of information on the relations between conquered elites and Arabs, exchange of the culture and art e/t/c. Good book for introduction into first stages of the establishing an Islamic empire but completely no information on it`s routine life and politics.

Perhaps not as in depth as some might want, but for the casual reader with a passing interest it is entertaining and informative. I feel it provides a good grounding for those looking for a "starting point" on the subject, or a good overview for those just looking to get a general idea of when, how and why the early Arab Conquests happened.
