I have seen the photographs of Jacob Riis in the real and was very disappointed to see them so poorly reproduced in this book. Documenting impoverished NYC in the late 19th century what Riis is most known for and his photographs were an important part of that work.It's possible I didn't do my homework here but it is a good reminder of one of the shortcomings of buying books online. Had I picked this up in a bookstore and seen how poorly the photography was represented, I would not have bought it. I'm interested in the story but the photographs tell so much of it and are in every way as important as the words.

This a Very, Very, cheaply copied, version, stolen from the original book. The clowns who "copied, and pasted" paragraphs from the original, couldn't even bother to do it correctly. Typos are rampant. A four year old could've done a better job. The pictures are smudged, and blurry. They obviously were out to make a quick buck. And they even had the nerve to print when they made it ( when you order it, they print it, off of their copy machine).Word to the wise... DO NOT BUY A BOOK FROM THIS PUBLISHER.

Ok, if you read the whole description of this edition, you will see at the very bottom that this is a special reprint of a specific edition that didn’t include any of the photos... but I sought out this book because it was called an important piece of photojournalism...Half of the point of the original book was the photos, so I had not expected that there was going to be an edition that removed the photos. The text is still important, but repeoducing a collection of photos without the photos is cheap.

Riis had intimate knowledge of the slums of New York having lived there briefly after his arrival from his native Denmark. He experienced a gradual worsening of his circumstances, hunger, theft and rejection. After finding employment as a newspaper reporter, Riis experimented with photography and he was able to document the overcrowding of tenements, the dismal conditions of many dwellings, shiftless drunkards, decrepit alleys and groups of newspaper boys (shoeless!). Meticulously documented conditions, census figures, and income of his subjects reveal a horrendous picture of "the other half" of New York. Separated into chapters devoted to the living quarters of the various immigrant groups (Irish, Jewish, Italian, Chinese etc.), he cannot escape some stereotypes - the money grubbing Jew, the dirty Irish, the "almost" clean Germans - as evidenced in the respective tenement blocks. From overcrowding, starvation wages, dismal hygienic environment - no water in the summer, smallpox, tuberculosis, measles, typhoid, cholera, on to little schooling, malevolent landlords. Then, finally, there might be a way out ... Riis writes about some semi-enlightened landlords, who make a good return on their investment while providing decent living conditions. Yet, the immigrants keep coming, the slums are always there, An enlightening book. Thanks to the photographs the horrendous conditions are made clear. The Kindle edition was a scanned version of Riis' 1890 study complete with photographs and appendices.

Wonderful book, I got it since my great g-parents, grandparents and parents came from the Victorian to 1935 era of in Manhattan. They left Ireland to make their fortune here. I was aware of some of the poverty and conditions, but this book really shows how awful and harsh the immigrants had things and especially their children living sometimes on the streets. They suffered much, and people have no idea except for eyewitness accounts of the appalling conditions of shelters, work houses, suicides, alcoholism that they fell into after leaving their poor home countries for a better life in America. This is a classic by Jacob Riis and a window into a world unknown to most people. He attempted to alleviate the bad living conditions of poor people by exposing their living conditions to the middle and upper classes. Think things are bad now?, You should see how bad, "bas is", as you travel with the writer into ghettos and alleyways of working people toiling to just eke out an existence at long hours, often working at home making clothes and other goods to sell.

This edition is full of typos, many of which render entire sentences illogical. The whole thing is awkwardly formatted, as if the editor had no concept that the information was going to appear on the page of a book. There is no table of contents. "Special illustrated edition" is a complete lie -- the images are uselessly reproduced. Many of the images are so illegible that the typed captions within the image had to be reproduced outside the image. Not a single image in the book is adequate or useful -- I went online for worthwhile reproductions. I was truly disappointed with this edition which is in no way fit to be published. The publisher, "Seven Treasures Publications" does not seem to have a website, and offers only a fax number and an email address, nor is an editor named. This is clearly not a serious nor reputable publication company -- anyone who has bought this book, including me, was duped.

The photos from this dark time in the most poor section of a bustling immigrant city were very stark and startling. The author writes the narrative very well, and it is as if he has studied these people for themselves, by being among them. His expose was very instrumental in getting changes effected for the benefit of these poor people. When we look at these, we are reminded of the hardships that were endured by our forefathers and mothers, who came to America, willing to risk everything for the opportunity presented here. It should increase our respect for them tremendously, to understand, in stark black and white evidence, of how they were forced to live.

Justo Gonzalez caps off his three-volume history of Christian thought with another solid effort. It is easy to read and provides valuable insight for the person already familiar with Reformation and post-Reformation theology. One of its major strengths is the analysis of the relationship of Calvin's thought to subsequent Reformed theology as well as the development of Luther's views among the Lutheran scholastics. His discussion of nineteenth-century Protestant thought, particularly Schleiermacher, was also insightful. I would highly recommend the book for these reasons. However, I found his discussion of twentieth century theology somewhat disappointing. Gonzalez spends a significant amount of time on various neo-orthodox thinkers such as Barth, Bultmann, and Tillich, but pretty much ignores developments within evangelical theology. Whether we agree or disagree with contemporary evangelical thought, it has been influential, particularly in America, and deserves treatment in any discussion of twentieth-century theological trends.

Christmas present. Feel sure the girls will love this. One of several I bought for a friends' grandchildren for Christmas.

 I own most of Amanda Neel's coloring books and really appreciate her artistic ability. In her previous dog coloring book, “Lovely Dogs”, she portrayed a realistic version of various dog breeds. In “Doodle Dogs, she takes a different approach by creating a realistic outline of the dog and then filling them with beautiful doodles. That allows me to go experiments with colors to create a dog of my own imagining.The designs are quite detailed and have intricate spots to color. Other than using an ultra-fine point marker, I didn't have to use anything special to color the designs.There are two types of designs in the book. One is a head portrait and the other is a full body portrait. The head portraits have elaborate doodle style frames around them. The full body designs have backgrounds included and a simple line frame around the outside of the design. There are a variety of breeds included but, unfortunately, no listing of which are in the book.This is what I found when I colored in this book and tested the paper with my various coloring medium:30 Doodle Dog designs of various breedsDesigns are printed on one side of the page.Paper is typical of CreateSpace, thin, white, slightly rough and non-perforated.Glue BindingDesigns stop before the binding area with plenty of room to cut out pages if you choose to do so.Designs have frames or framing lines around the outer edges of the designBook opens fairly flat for coloringAlcohol and water-based markers bleed through the paper though water-based are mostly spotting.Gel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows. India ink can bleed through if you use multiple coats of medium.Colored pencils work well with the paper though hard leads leave dents at the back of the page. Oil an wax-based pencils can provide good color (especially with multiple layers.) I was able to blend and layer well with all types of pencils.I suggest using a blotter page under your working page to keep both dents and ink from marring the pages below.

There are long hair: shed everywhere…..short hair: still shed…..and my favorite: the no shed poodle.What’s Included: Eleven (11) head illustrations with flowers or abstract design borders to color with no background and nineteen (19) full body illustrations with color-in backgrounds and thin line borders. Both head and full body have oodles of tiny doodles to color.Illustrations include both standing and sitting canines. Most are front-facing; however, a few are side views. Some of the illustrations are vertical on the page but quite a few are horizontal.Breeds included: Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, Boxer, Beagle, Poodle, Chihuahua, Terriers, Dachshund, Schnauzer, German Shepherd, Greyhound, Great Dane and many more. All are recognizable dog breeds and are delightfully drawn.A few of the doodles are flyspeck in size and a sharp pointed coloring tool is essential. There are; however, areas where brush pens and large core colored pencils do have turn-around space. Fun!KUDOS:1. The illustrations are so much fun to color, but an impatient beginner might become frustrated because the designs are intricate.2. One illustration per page on 8.5×11 inch white paper.3. Glue Binding that is easy to flatten and stay put without having to constantly fight the pages to keep the book open.4. Well-defined borders. No worries about leaving uneven strokes to give a confusing finale.5. The doodle dogs are centered in the borders. All borders have at least 3/8 inches between border and spine, making it easy to remove the page without damaging the picture if one wishes to do so.6. There is one blank page at the front of the book and two blank pages at back of book to use for doodling, note taking or whatever.7. The cover picture is included. This is always a plus for me!8. Address for download of printable PDF files is included at back of book.DISLIKES:1. Non-perforated pages2. Paper is thin and slightly grainy. Some colored lead leaves a porous look. Wet media leave bleed-through or shadows. Do not forget a blotter page!I used seven (7) brands of colored pencils….both hard core and soft core. I also played around with glitter gel pens, and I discovered while these pens look great in my coloring book, they do not photograph worth a flip!

I'd forgotten how much fun coloring can be! As an avid card maker, I have plenty of alcohol markers and they work well with the type and thickness of the pages. If you're going to use alcohol markers like Copic - what I use, make sure you place a piece of cardstock behind it or remove it from the book before coloring as the marker could bleed through from the back. After I completed my first, I wanted to do the same one over again using a different color scheme. So, now I just print a few copies and can color multiples of the same image. Your results may differ, depending on what type of paper or cardstock you use to copy.There are many different breeds and perfect poses.

I love adult coloring books, and if you like dogs, this one is very fun. Great artistry. The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is that the designs get TOO detailed. There are so many little places to color, it's easy to run out of colors! I would often rather blend colors in an area that's just a little bit larger than fill in so many tiny little bits. But the artwork is great. Have fun with it!

I was incredibly disappointed with this book. The cover is not a good example of the illustrations inside. The designs are far too busy to do anything creative with them. The doodle dogs by themselves would’ve been great illustrations, however, they added a very busy design in the background which makes the picture very difficult visually to color. If I hadn’t colored one of the pictures I would have returned the book.

The author chose to write this book not only as a guide to potential franchisees, but to make the concept of owning a franchise business radically transparent to the reader.The author honestly shares the basic foundation of franchising from costs, choosing what type of franchise that is a right fit for you, understanding the process, picking up on red flags, financing options to negotiations.One thing I noticed about Mr. Myers is that as a businessman he learned to rely on a few nuggets of truth said by his mentors, friends and famous people such as Ernest Hemingway and Socrates. The Bible and the creeds, look sometimes controversial and with competing claims to truthfulness (Take the Chaledonian Diophysite nature of Christ, without any true or apparent allusion to scripture).'Credo Catenata' Sampler:After an interesting first chapter by editor Seitz, on 'Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth,' the next four chapters have a central focus on the inquiry on Christological mystery.Alan Torrance highlights the incoherence of Arianism; if Christ is not "of one substance with the Father," then humanity's encounter with the Son is not actually an encounter with God. Gunton underlines, meanwhile, that only God has the power over sin and consequently victory over death, to the disadvantage of the wanting Arian christology. Gunton claims it as a recurrent and contemporary revisited heresy, not merely an ancient schismatic history.Jenson presents his view, on pre-foudation christology, in which the eternal Son has always been in fellowship with the Father prior to the incarnation. Athanasius has always declared: "There could not be a Father without His only begotten, eternal Son." The essays appeal to Scripture as much as to ecclesiastic history and Church tradition.The Nicene Church:Wm. Abraham spells it (I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and apostolic church) in a short paragraph; "I began this way for two reasons. First, it illustrates a useful and long established way to focus our thinking about the church. It is very fitting and relatively easy to think in terms of images of the church. ... Second, the images employed here are intended to correct what is endemic in much thinking about the church, namely a tendency to idealize."

One can find any number of books of recent vintage on the importance and value of the Nicene Creed for the life of the modern church, some of them quite well done while a few others appear somewhat mediocre. Nicene Christianity: The Future for a New Ecumenism offers something uniquely different, while also being "quite well done." This particular work is uniquely different by virtue of its very presentation: a total of 17 "premier theologians" (says the back cover) who offer their views on the value of the creed as an ideal antidote for the divided and fractured state of the modern church, the writers themselves coming from a variety of denominational backgrounds. The panel of writers include Christopher Seitz (editor), Carl Braaten, Colin Gunton, Robert Jensen, John Webster, and Kathryn Greene-McCreight with a truly worthwhile and insightful Introduction by Philip Turner. There's much here to like.The subtitle "The Future for a New Ecumenism" is a less than subtle reminder that the ecumenical movement itself has proven (for the most part) to be somewhat of a disappointment: great and grand hopes did not materialize. Indeed, the movement appeared to dwindle down to improved relations between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, with much of mainline Protestantism basically reduced to looking on while offering gentle applause. The New Ecumenism hopes for something a bit more dynamic and (hopefully) a tad more successful. In any case, it's far too early to determine whether or not such fond hopes might yet be realized. Nonetheless, I view this new ecumenism as a truly hopeful beginning and one that may yet prove its worth.Readers will form their own opinions as to preferred articles and authors; I can only state here that (inclusive of Turner's Introduction mentioned above) I especially enjoyed reading Jenson, Webster, Braaten and Gunton - with the added comment that I believe Seitz did a remarkable job as editor. Seitz, in point of fact, also wrote the opening chapter: a penetrating bit of analysis in which (for some additional color...I suspect) he made reference to Jesus Seminar participant Marcus Borg (no lover of creeds...we can be certain) who is quoted (pg 21) as stating his particular preference for a "broader universal spirit" as opposed to the now hoary with age personal God of biblical faith. Borg has also repeatedly expressed his deep distaste for a Christianity that claims unique status, in a world of great religious diversity, where Jesus is proclaimed the way to salvation and the fullest revelation that God has given to us. It's all very postmodern and we know that Borg (and the Jesus Seminar in general) would have it no other way - for there is no "reigning meta-narrative"...other than postmodern thought, mind you! (One wonders if perhaps gravity - spelled with a capital "G" - might serve equally well as the broader universal spirit, seeing as how it is impersonal, invisible, possessive of power, and diffused throughout the universe...with the added comfort that no one would ever feel compelled to believe that "the fear of the universal spirit is the beginning of wisdom.") But all this is for another day.Whether or not this new ecumenism will show itself to have legs is difficult at this point to say. My own view is that I see truly great possibilities here for the future well-being of the church. And yet such a grand vision for the future clearly calls for much greater involvement on the part of the church regarding the matters addressed in these various essays, as well as some rather aggressive and active leadership towards these ends on the part of the very individuals who themselves wrote the articles. I deeply hope this book succeeds in attracting a greater readership audience in the future, and that those who are impacted by these essays (as well they should be!) will themselves become actively involved in promoting this vision of a new ecumenism as outlined in these pages - and an "ecumenism" that will display considerably greater success than what we have seen to date.So congratulations once again to Brazo Press for another true gem - and to all fellow believers who were (and are!) involved in this project. May it manifest great success in the coming years.

It has been 11 years since the fifth edition of this well-known manual was published under the title CBE Style Manual: A Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers in the Biological Sciences. Earlier editions focused on style for those publishing in the plant sciences, zoology, microbiology, and the medical sciences. This quite expanded sixth edition covers all scientific disciplines, excluding only a few technological areas that are not experimental or observational. In order to include new disciplines, the sections on how to write and submit papers to scientific journals have been omitted. This was a sensible change, since each journal already publishes its own procedures.The Style Manual Committee of the Council of Biology Editors had five aims in producing this excellent book: to support convergence in style in an international framework, to simplify formats for citations and references, to simplify style rules, to offer options based on the deeply rooted conventions of some disciplines, and to reduce work at the keyboard. The major parts of the book are "General Style Conventions," "Special Scientific Conventions," "Journals and Books," and "Publishing Process." Of these parts, the first two make up the bulk of the book. "General Style Conventions" covers every possible aspect, including alphabets, symbols, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, and geographic descriptions. Most of these conventions are also used outside the scientific community, so this manual can serve as a style reference for all writers, although some conventions are unique to science. For example, this section recommends the use of Arabic numerals instead of spelled-out words for the numbers one to nine. This edition is obsolete. The CSE edition now published by Chicago U. Press is the current version.

For doing scientific editing, this book has everything that I need. It is well organizes and incredibly thorough - a must if you want things to be edited and then published correctly.

This is an old edition but it contains all of the information that a scholar would need to put together a quality publication. I buy a copy for all of my students at this price.

Boring, but that's to be expected (read the title)!The previous version was probably a bit better. I am still unable to find material that I would expect to be in this book. The Chicago Manual of Style refers to this book. I'm waiting to see what the next version brings.

Stinson has been published in various publications including the Newport Daily News, Old Rhode Island, the Pineapple Post and the sailing publication WindCheck magazine. He was a regular contributor, photo researcher and research historian for Newport Life magazine for almost a decade. Stinson has also been a regular contributor to Newport This Week. It's a quick read. People who are from or are familiar with Newport, RI will probably like it best. I can't wait for his next book about Newport to come out!
