Review

"Darkly humorous, existential, erotic, trance inducing — these comics wield a rare and innovative power....The brilliance of [Claveloux's] comics lies in what they require of the viewer, to be intimate with what is not known, both within the work and themselves." —Leopoldine Core, The New York Times"Like a time capsule, these 1970s stories by French cartoonist Claveloux—largely untranslated and unseen in the States until this collection—are a reminder of just how outrageous and imaginative comics could be back in that freewheeling decade.... Claveloux’s exquisitely detailed illustrations reflect such contemporary forces as underground comix artists from Robert Crumb to Victor Moscoso, designer Heinz Edelman, and the Day-Glo colors of psychedelic posters.... Her amalgam, though, is a singularly remarkable trip." —Booklist“Nicole Claveloux’s comics come across as odd, mind-bending 'What If’s.'….The work, certainly, has that air of being created at an inspired moment, with 'The Green Hand' in particular presenting as a little-recognized masterpiece.” —The Comics Journal"The artwork...is some of the most beautiful ever created for our lowly form—vivid, dreamlike, with intensely vivid hand-separated colors unlike anything I’ve ever seen." —Daniel Clowes“Claveloux[’s]...explicitly adult pop-art fantasia delivers emotional insight and imaginative visuals that take the driver’s seat away from the strong logic of the narrative and enjoyably amble readers toward the byways of the subconscious with hauntingly powerful designs and sagacious observation.” —Library Journal, starred review

This is a very nice reproduction of a beautiful example of French comic art. I enjoy looking at this book very much.

Beautiful art, I was recommended this book through social media and was happy to discover an artist I never knew was out there.

Great to see this

Very quick read. Good illustrations, story weak.

I only thumbed through this book but it looked good. It was a gift.

The common theme running through the pieces deal with the dangers, uncertainty, and banality of growing up. The greatest joy to the author, it seems, is to remain the eternal child and dwell in a never-never land, one step beyond reality. The stories collected here are not coherent in the regular sense. They follow a logic of a dream. Some of them don’t seem to have been plotted out beforehand and drifted along as the author’s imagination drifted. These don’t make the stories bad, but just be warned. Don’t expect concrete stories with a definite character arc. These are one step aside from that.

If there’s any doubt in your mind about getting this book, Google Image the artist for samples. See if you get drunk on the lush colors, the shape-shifting narrative, the rich art.I bought this because of that gut reaction. No regrets and bountiful rewards.I never liked the 1980s Heavy Metal magazine much, but there were a tiny number of their comics that I memorized. Reading this book, I was surprised (and not surprised) that Nicole Claveloux created one of those comic gems. And yes, it’s in this book.

These comics were first published in France in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Though unique, they are like the Underground comix from 60's and 70's America. They are especially similar to works by Victor Moscoso, except Nicole Claveloux uses more recognizably human people to move readers through surreal narratives. This collection of stories, some color and some black-and-white, is not consistent in quality, but at its best always makes me want more from the creator. There is nothing else quite the same.

I would like to thank Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with a free electronic ARC of this book, via Netgalley. Any reviews I give are done obligation free, and are done free of any charge. Now, if you’ve been an avid reader of my posts on this blog you will have seen the January one containing pictures of me. And you would have rightly guessed I am indeed a plus size person physically (as well as in personality ;-) ).Sadly I have never fit into what was deemed fashionable. I am 187cm (6’ 2”) and have been since I was about 12 years old. And with the height came broad shoulders, wide hips and big boobs. So even when I am at my “thinnest” (unlike now thanks to illness) I just do not fit into “average” or “fashionable” clothes. This is hard for someone who describes herself as tall and fat. As, according to fashion outlets, tall people are apparently all meant to be rail thin and 16 years old… while fat people are meant to be dwarves and in their 50’s. And so I’ve always hated clothing (when it comes to wearing it – cutting it up into rag yarn is a totally different story ;-) ) and have never really found anything that fits me. So have felt the fault lies with me for being the wrong shape and size. How the hell does this have anything to do with ‘Plus+’? Well, that little side story is explaining WHY I asked to read and review this book. And how life changing it has been.I LOVE ‘Plus+’. It is not, as some people have said, a book on fat women in photos. It is an affirmation of life, love and how clothing is there to make YOU – the wearer – feel good… as well as cover the bits you want covered and keep you warm/ cool as temperatures require. Each page was a woman looking at me as if challenging me to just be ME. Dress for me, accept me in my odd shape and sizes, be free to enjoy clothing. Their quoted expressions and discussions on their style and loves, their choices and challenges… They are there to encourage the reader to realise “YOU are better than that. Dress to suit you, not to suit others”. And, for being someone who doesn’t like buying clothes online as I fear nothing will fit me - just like in face to face clothes shopping horror stories that are my life – I have looked up the sites mentioned in ‘Plus+’ and they have helped encourage my freedom from clothes fears. I have ordered clothes online! I have found women out there who – yeah we’re not all the same shape and size – have inspired me to give up on that fat and frumpy look that is making me so unhappy and have me seek the style that fits me right – mentally as well as physically. To all the women that appear in ‘Plus+’ – thank you. You are beautiful; I love your styles, thank you for helping me unblinker myself from my fashion fears. Now, the reason I didn’t give ‘Plus+’ a whole 5 out of 5 is due to the layout. This book is meant to be enjoyed in the paper form. I read it as an ACSM and couldn’t view as two pages… only one at a time. And that just didn’t do the book any justice and made it hard to truly enjoy reading it the way it should have been read. Yes I am being picky, but it did detract from my enjoyment. I hope not all eBook versions for sale are that bad.Would I recommend this book to others?Yes I would. ‘Plus+’ is not some fashion catalogue for fat people. It is an expression of freedom to all body types to realise you look good if you feel good in what you’re wearing. Don’t let the fashion world dictate what is right and wrong – take control and show it what it right for you.So I would recommend ‘Plus+’ to people needing a bit of a boost in the right direction to loving themselves for how they are, rather than feeling they need to change to fit into society’s strict, narrow mindset. ‘Plus+’ is a freeing book, helping the reader see life is too short to hate what you look like when you can be out there loving life and yourself in clothes you want to wear.Would I buy this book for myself?Yes I would, in its paperback format. I would have to see if it was available to me in Australia, as Amazon.com.au doesn’t list it… but there is more than one online bookstore I can lurk on. ;-) And why would I buy it? Because it contains some great “pep” talk advice, reminders to be myself on the outside as well as on the in, and it contains all those plus size online shops I want to keep visiting. :-)In summary: ‘Plus+’ isn’t just some coffee table fashion book, it is an affirmation that you look good how you are, no need to change to please others if you are happy with yourself. An excellent read!

This is a hard book to classify because it feels more like a motivation book (wear whatever you want!) rather than a fashion book (inspiration of creating fashion styles). That is because the images are, for the most part, collected rather than curated. There’s no attempt to categorize and classify: Fashion forward, retro flavor, the little black dress, day and night, the perfect professional outfit – none of that is here. It’s pretty much a bunch of images of people wearing whatever with little blubs. So while all the more power to them, I don’t know if looking at people throwing on whatever they felt like that day and photographing it really tells the story I wanted to follow.I think your enjoyment will likely come from just knowing that there are many people who don’t care what others think and just want to wear what they like. Whether it is a stained and ripped t-shirt over sweats or a ruffled pinstripe surplice dress. Each of the photographs comes with the model’s (a lot of bloggers are in here that plus size fans will recognize) idea of her style. It may or may not match the picture and I can’t say that they were very useful. Instead of describing their style, I’d rather they had said why that particular style represents them and why it is their favorite outfit. Something more than the usual “If I had to categorize my style, i would call if classically chic with a touch of glam drama” doublespeak that doesn’t really enhance the viewing experience. I want to know why you picked that skirt and that top, why you wear it a lot, why it best represents you. There are all sizes covered here – pear to apple, 1x to 5x, which I appreciate. And the writing is always upbeat and positive – motivational. Each page has 1-2 images so you won’t run out of things to enjoy. I won’t say the ‘fashion’ is inspirational or will teach you about how to really showcase a plus size figure. But the words are motivational so you won’t feel you have to be ashamed of being curvy. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Plus+ is a collection of plus size models showing their sense of style and confidence in photos and share their own words. You can see the confidence flowing through them and it makes me wish I had more for myself! They wear what they want because they can and who cares what anyone else thinks! The models are a variety of plus size, are different races, and there is even a Muslim woman expressing herself in fashion! Most of the fashion choices were not ‘for me’ and would not be something I would wear, but that is not what this book is about. The title says it all and it did reach its purpose: Plus+: Style Inspiration for Everyone. Wear what you want because YOU want to whether it be colors or black, short skirts or long skirts, shorts or pants, etc! Be comfortable in your skin, as it is who you are.Special thanks to the publisher Andrews McMeel Publishing for granting me an e-arc copy that I chose to read.

Plus+ is a coffee table book exploring plus size fashion.Popping with pictures of regular plus size women wearing what they enjoy, Plus+ shouldn’t be unusual. After all per the National Institute of Health, 2 out of 3 women are overweight or obese. However, I have never seen another book like it. How many large women have you seen in Vogue? Not many.Plus+ is the perfect gift for curvy girls looking for new wardrobe ideas. There are a multitude of styles shown. I do wish there were longer bios of the models. 4 stars! Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review

* “Pimentel tenders the story of Bobbi Gibb, the first woman to (surreptitiously) run the classic Boston Marathon, with illustrations that pay close attention to the route along the way. . . . It is as though Gibb is on one long runner's high, and it's good fun to run along with her. . . . [Archer’s] artwork is an eyeful, a deep-dish mixture of oil paint and collage with tissue paper and hand-stamped patterned papers as materials. In addition, she adds mile markers and elevation notes to convey the runners' toils and why it is called "Heartbreak Hill." . . . A bright salutation of a story, with one determined woman at its center.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review“Bobbi Gibb found joy in running before it was an activity women were encouraged or even allowed to participate in. Faced with enormous obstacles (including having available running gear), Gibb went on to become the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon, blazing the trail for thousands of women to come. The story does justice to Gibb’s dream. . . . The lush collage-style illustrations are a highlight, specifically the clever mile marker and elevation indicators which stretch across the pages as Gibb runs the race. The closing image nicely incorporates the names of other female marathoners as a tribute. An inspiring addition to picture book biography collections.”—School Library Journal“Pimentel introduces Bobbi Gibb, who in 1966 became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, in an affectionate portrait informed by interviews with Gibb herself. In textured collages, Archer creates a cozy community of autumn leaves, spring fields, and quaint rooftops, against which Gibb trains for the marathon. . . . Gibb finishes the race to acclaim, opening the door for other dedicated women runners. A triumphant story of an athlete and spirited individual.”—Publishers Weekly"The illustrations are brightly colored collages that fill the pages from edge to edge. . . . The artist has included mile markers and notes about the course elevation to help the reader understand how difficult the marathon is. This simple story will leave all types of readers cheering for a woman who believed in herself and worked hard to make her dreams come true. This would be a great addition to a story time about sports or successful women."—School Library Connection“Pimentel delivers a sharply focused, hard-pounding narrative, and Archer supplies inventive oil and collage artwork worthy of the text. . . . An afterword on Gibb’s subsequent marathons, notes on the use of her maiden name and on quotation sources, and a selected bibliography are appended, and the final spread featuring the names of women marathon winners gives viewers leads on other stories worth investigating.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books“Clear on Gibb’s determination to overcome discrimination in order to follow her passion. . . . Pimentel’s straightforward text builds drama and suspense, becoming appropriately staccato and urgent when describing the race. Archer’s vibrant mixed-media and collage art portrays a variety of settings, seasons, and situations; a nice touch is the bottom-of-the-page border marking the miles as we follow Bobbi’s progress along the marathon route.”—The Horn Book

This book tells the story of Bobbi Gibb and the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. The officials wouldn't let her register, and so she decided to run unofficially to prove that women were indeed physiologically capable of running 26.2 miles. In today's world, such ignorance seems preposterous, but this just shows how far we've come.I was moved to tears by Ms. Pimentel's text that captured Bobbi's love for running, and her determination to prove that women can do more than people care to believe. And Ms. Archer's illustrations added to the beauty of the story as well as the emotion. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially for those wanting to learn about women's struggle to be seen, heard, and understood.

This is an awesome book! It is a great story told very well. The drawings are amazing as well. I actually bought this for a girlfriend of mine who is running in the Boston Marathon coming up. It would also be great for any kids that are interested in running or that you want to get interested in running. It’s hard to believe sometimes that there actually has been a lot of change in perceptions of what women can do; this story was just 50 years ago!

I love picture book biographies. This is a fabulous story of one person overcoming all odds.

We live near Boston and watch it all the time. I was actually At the marathon the year the bomb went off. The police told us to leave immediately which we did. We caught the train back to Newburyport.

Great book for sharing positive girl role modes.

Love this book!

This beautiful book by Annette Bay Pimentel and illustrated by Micha Archer, is the true story of the first girl to run the Boston Marathon. Women were not allowed to register for the Boston Marathon in 1966. It wasn't believed they could run the 26.2 mile distance. But Bobbi Gibb knew she could do it! She ran the race unregistered for three years in a row. Follow Bobbi as she trains across the country, often in nursing shoes, through gorgeously illustrated pages and fascinating text. The Boston Marathon (first event in 1897) finally allowed women to register for the race for the first time in 1972. Bobbi Gibb inspired and paved the way for future woman marathoners. GIRL RUNNING is a delightful commemoration of her accomplishments.

Annette has written another wonderful book, that is both visually, intellectually and emotionally engaging to its readers! I am an elementary school librarian and my students loved listening to Girl Running! The story runs smoothly and is paced like a good race, with amazing illustrations that will leave both children and adults in awe! We loved Mountain Chef too- which I read to my students in grades 2 through 4. Girl Running would be suitable for students as young as Kindergarten and upwards. One of our teachers bought one for her boyfriend and his mom that just ran the Boston Marathon too!
