About the Author

Joi Barrios serves as a Lecturer teaching Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of California, Berkeley after having served as an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). She has also taught at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies, UCLA, and UCI. She has won fourteen national literary awards and for her contributions to literature Barrios was among the 100 women chosen as Weavers of History for the Philippine Centennial Celebration. In 2004, she also received the TOWNS (Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service) Award. Julia Camagong teaches Filipino at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York, and is the Co-Executive Director of Philippine Forum, a non-profit community organization based in New York City. She is also Vice President for Programs of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), a U.S.-wide alliance of community organizations and institutions working for the rights and welfare of Filipinos.

I am learning Tagalog for the first time and this book was recommended to me by my language teacher. I love that it is easy for anyone to understand and the illustrations help tremendously. My grandma (who is a native Tagalog speaker) also favors this book. Highly recommended.

I bought this for my son who is studying Tagalog. It has been very helpful and he uses it daily.

Pretty easy to read along and understand. The only thing it should have more of is more explanation on how to pronounce.

As with any new language, it takes some time to really get into it. However, this book makes it a lot easier to speak some Tagalog to people you meet. Being caucasian, born and raised in the US, learning some phrases is not so easy, but with time and repeating, it will become more fulfilling. To live in the Philippines, it would make it more easy to learn the language. I try to speak Tagalog with every Filipino I meet. Some are enthusiastic, some are not, but it is fun. Ako si Roger. Sige po.

If u want to learn Tagalog, then this is the book for u. Not only u learn how by reading, u learn by listening to the audio CD on how to pronounce the language. U won't be disappointed.

My comments are based on the 1999 Eighth edition. This 2002 edition is similar.This book is fabulous. No argument possible, it's a great book. It may be better suited to some experience/interest levels than others, but by any standard it's an excellent book.It's like an "Encyclopedia of the IBM-PC," but with in depth treatment of the topics. If you've ever wondered what any acronym (PCMCIA, e.g.) means, you will find it in this book. The difference is that whereas another book may explain that acronym with only a sentence or a paragraph, Norton gives you seven pages on that and related technologies including: ATA protocol, CardBus, Card Services, CIS, flash, Media storage format, Socket Services.... Multiply that level of detail times every computer acronym you've ever wondered about and you have a valuable resource.The book is an in-depth overview to the PC. You get deeper coverage of each topic then you would normally get in a book of this type, and therein lies the main value. Still, since it's an overview, if you want to dig into a topic you are given excellent references to external sources.As expected, given Norton's roots in the disk utilities area, great depth is given to the subject of hard and floppy disks and their structure and organization. You won't find a better or deeper treatment of this material anywhere other than Norton's materials. If you want to understand the FAT, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, master boot block, master boot record, partition table, etc., this is the place.The book targets beginners to experts, and I think that's a strength. Beginners get introductory material (like what is a byte or a serial cable) explained, while experts get deep treatment (like why a 16550A UART is better than a 16550 p429). That makes this single book a great reference for anyone, especially a newbie. You may have to study some pages carefully or even look up external resources, but isn't that unavoidable?Sadly, tragically, this book is left over from an earlier, better, time of computing. The first edition of this book is from a day when you owned your own computer, not Microsoft. In that day, fun, excitement, experimentation, discovery, fascination, and programming the hardware yourself were still part of the equation. In that day it was popular to use a tool like DEBUG and poke around in the portions of memory managed by the operating system and really understand what was going on. Now, Windows is so complex and sophisticated that poking around like that is of limited usefulness. Still, tell me where are you going to get anyone to tell you about DEBUG or using I/O ports to talk to the CMOS or real-time clock these days?Also the info on understanding the hard and floppy disks, while fascinating, is of limited use in modern times. Back in the day when a 10MB hard disk cost you $1000, yes, you might take the time to use DEBUG to poke around the sectors and repair the partition table. In modern times I would not do that. I would just go to "Best Buy" and buy a new one for $50 and use the other 2 days of my weekend for reading this excellent book.

2012 Book:I've written a previous review on this book, a book I absolutely love. Personally, I savored reading it - up to an entire movie at a time. There were facts discovered and pictures I'd never seen in all of my other Bond books.This is a book for most collectors - the only problem is the price. It was nearly $150 after tax.************************The James Bond Archives, Dec 2015I'm not going to post this part on the Dec 2015 book page because I haven't purchased it yet so it's not fair. Something I really don't understand is the price of this book. It's on sale (reg. $70) for $40. Why so cheap when the other one was so expensive??! Are there movies already written about in the 2012 book which was edited in the current book?

This is a very big book, and its size is fully utilized to deliver a unique value - the POWER of a PRINTED book !!! No tablet could ever deliver such an enjoyable experience as this book delivers. I'm one of the big fans of the James Bond films, especially the early Sean Connery Bond films. This book not only brings back many good memories of the early Connery-Bond films but also provides interesting new information and insights. Photographs and illustrations are plenty and impressive, selected with care and attention to details. Other (Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, Craig) Bond films are covered well, too including that glorious 1967 spoof Casino Royale. If you are a fan of the James Bond films, chances are you'll get a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction from this book. My hats off to TASCHEN for reaffirming the truth that PRINTED books will never fade away.

I took some time deciding to buy this version of the book over the updated version which includes "SPECTRE". The two reasons I went with this one were: reviews complaining about the inferior binding/spine of the updated version as well as the size of the print in the updated but shrunken down version. Let me say I could not be happier with this purchase. This book is amazing and a must have for any real Bond fan. Spend the extra money and don't worry about "SPECTRE" not being included....this book is a masterpiece. You want the bigger pages and better quality binding. You will love this book.

Bought this because I had first bought the Blu-Ray set of James Bond movies in a "deal of the day" from Amazon, and saw this for a good price a little while later. If you like James Bond, this is a must have book. It is huge, quite heavy (not an easy book to read in bed) and chock full of pictures and fun facts. We had a large gathering at Thanksgiving and several people had picked up the book and went through it page by page (sad to say more than I have even to this date) talking about the movies and stuff, so that made me feel good, as they have never picked up a book of mine (and I have some 3000 plus in the library) on any subject before. I was very happy to share it for the day. I don't know if it will become a collectable or not, only time will tell, but I don't buy things for that reason, still, I would get it while you can. It is well worth it.

Another gorgeous Taschen book. Chockfull of great photos and text, beautifully designed and a must-have for Bond fans. These Archive books are huge, heavy, a bit unwieldy, but stunning. If you got in early you of course got the film strip, which is fun. But look at the price now, oh waiters.

This is a phenomenal book. I own many others on this subject and yet, most of the pictures on this new one were new to me. And what can you say about the size? The book is so heavy, it is even difficult to maneuver, but that isn't really a bad thing, as the size of its photos is what makes it so great looking in the first place.Only complaint: the presentation to every film includes some images from the titles, with the exception of "Skyfall", but the latter entry was being filmed while the book was being assembled, so this is understandable.At any rate, this book is just what you'd expect from the 50th. anniversary of one of the most beloved and surely, the longest lasting movie character of all time.Don't expect a Kindle Edition!

If you are a fan of James Bond, this book is fascinating and simply gorgeous. If I were reviewing the book alone, it would be 5 stars and beyond. The disappointment comes from the fact that the publisher did away with the 35mm film frames from Dr. No that were included in the first printing. The Amazon listing makes no mention of this anywhere. It took some digging on line to find out why our copy did not have this when we opened it. I can understand the decision to stop putting them in the book, but not changing the listing makes this incredibly deceptive.

This book is amazing! It arrived in a rather plain cardboard "suitcase-style" slipcase with a plastic handle, but WOW the book itself is beautiful! I actually weighed it as soon as it came out of the shipping box because it was so heavy. It is huge - 12" x 16.5" x 2"!There is no paper jacket, but because of the size and heft of this tome, it would probably be difficult to keep one on undamaged. The book's cover lookes like red pebble-grained snakeskin or lizard and the inside front and back cover pages are copies of a shooting schedule from "From Russia With Love". The pages are high-quality glossy paper and there seems to be something on just about every page, that's why I count 600 as opposed to the 592 stated. One page has a little plastic pocket containing a filmstrip of 12 original frames from a Dr. No. original 35mm print.I am glad to see that all of the movies from Dr. No to Skyfall are included as well as Never Say Never Again. Other reviewers have complained that much of the book is taken from DVD special features. Well, I like having a choice to either watch the features or read them. Many photos are included that have not been released elsewhere.I haven't looked much beyond the first few pages because this is the kind of book I love to consume a small serving at a time - to savor like a fine Port. For anyone who is a Bondophille, your Bond collection is not complete without The James Bond Archives.

About the Author

Jonny Steinberg was born and bred in South Africa. His previous two books, Midlands (2002) and The Number (2004) both won South Africa's premier nonfiction literary award, the Sunday Times Alan Paton Prize. Steinberg was educated at Wits University in Johannesburg, and at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has worked as a journalist at a national daily, written scripts for television drama, and has been a consultant to the South African government on criminal justice policy. He is currently writing a book about immigrants in New York.

Jonny Steinberg clearly and humanely presents the dilemma facing Sizwe, one of thousands of South Africans who face what Westerners regard as the essential HIV test.Partly in response to the South African government's inaction and dismissal of the pandemic of HIV and AIDS, Medecins Sans Frontiers establishes a program to educate villagers about HIV and to disseminate ARVs. Testing seems an obvious choice to Jonny and Dr. Hermann Reuter (of MSF): If Sizwe takes the test and has positive results, he will be prescribed ARVs that will keep him healthy and able to support his family.But Sizwe fears his village's reaction. A positive HIV result brings disdain: he's witnessed it himself when others have tested. Everyone knows that those who don't emerge quickly after receiving their results are being counseled so they can deal with their illness.If Sizwe tests positive, it's likely that he'll lose the clientele he's built up for his shop. He also knows that if he dies, his family will seize his hard-won earnings instead of taking care of his young son.There are also fears that westerners have discovered a cure for AIDS and are deliberately holding it back from Africans. If this seems far-fetched, think of how many conspiracy theories are churning around the internet, from Princess Diana's death to speculations about 9/11.Having worked in Kenya, I can attest to the deep divide between accepting western medicine and traditional reliance on the herb doctors. Chinua Achebe captures a similar this division (over religion) in The River Between.Jonny Steinberg discusses this Sizwe's vacillation (he wants to test but he daren't) with great sensitivity, compassion, and intelligence. He even includes a discussion with Sizwe: by telling Jonny "black secrets", has Sizwe betrayed his people?I couldn't put this book down. It's an enlightening journey, at least for this reader. Jonny also includes a booklist for further reading.Can't wait to read the next Steinberg!

Unbelievably heartbreaking read. Good book though.

This book was better than I thought. I had to read this for a medical anthropology class. This book was kind of a mystery as well as a personal account. The ending leaves you shocked. I would recommend this book.

Awesome read! I had to read this for a class, and I thought it would be kind of boring; but it was really insightful and interesting! Writing is really beautiful too.

provacative story

This is the best and most enlightening book on HIV available today. Steinberg outdoes himself, especially within explaining something that is otherwise inexplicable: the high infection rate of HIV in Southern Africa. Steinberg's approach is that of a true journalist, and we are left with a complex, unjudging portrait of an incredibly intricate story laced with race, history, culture, myth, belief, medicine, superstition and politics. Buy it for everyone you know...

This is a great account of the complexities in treating HIV/AIDS in a setting with a complex history of colonialism, racism, and poverty. Steinberg is honest about his own biases as he tries to understand what makes for a successful or unsuccessful health intervention. A great book for anyone interested in solutions to the HIV pandemic, especially those who are approaching the disease from a western mindset.
