Lesa Cline-Ransome is the author of many books for children, including My Story, My Dance: Robert Battle & Journey to Alvin Ailey, which was an ALA Notable Book, an IRA Notable Book for a Global Society, and an NCTE Orbis Pictus Recommended title for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children; Satchel Paige, an ALA Notable Book and a Top 10 Sports Book for Youth; and Words Set Me Free: The Story of Young Frederick Douglass, which The New York Times Book Review called, “visceral, intimate, and plainly told, this story is sure to move young children, and also motivate them to read more.” Her books were all illustrated by her husband, James E. Extremely well written with illustrations that are worthy of stopping to look at closely. The reader feels compelled to turn each page. On some pages, the illustrations (by the author’s husband) make the reader pause and think more carefully about the gravity of what the author is saying. Wow. They had to learn how to play tennis under those conditions? On other pages, the illustrations reveal the force and power of the sisters’ talent as well as the strong bond of these sisters. The author builds on these themes with quotes and descriptions of small moments like two sisters sitting in bed, looking out the window asking, “Do you really think I can do it?” and the father bringing in “busloads of neighborhood kids” to taunt the sisters so they wouldn’t be bothered by this during real tournaments.Would read this aloud to grades 3-5. OR would offer this as a title for small groups to read and discuss. OR would book talk this and then leave in the classroom library to be snatched up.If you're going to book talk this - I'd project the cover (with the title) and ask students to spend a few moments looking closely. You might ask, "What do you notice?" or "What is the illustrator trying to convey?" and "What do you think the title means?" You might also read aloud the page that starts with "By the time Venus was four she could hit five hundred tennis balls at every practice...At twelve, Venus announced she would win Wimbledon" (about page 13). And then ask, "Who wants to read to find out if she does?"If you're going to read this aloud, I'd read aloud twice. Once for the joy of it. And don't skip looking closely at the end covers and reading the author's note at the end. I've been meditating for years and felt somewhat stuck, having perhaps lost touch with the simplicity and importance of the foundations and basics of concentration. Meditation is a simple activity that in today's world of information overload coupled with our busy minds is turned into something elusive and hard to really master. This book will blow the cobwebs out of an experienced meditators practise and invigorate it with its no fluff advice. For a beginner, this book has all you will need to master your mind, find peace and open up to a truly amazing path. With Metta. L

I've read and continue to read and take courses on meditation and mindfulness. All of them are fascinating and provide enormous insight regarding this life-changing subject. But in this simple book you actually learn what to do. Nowhere else that I've seen will you find such a concise set of instructions (there aren't many). Without this book, I would have assumed I just don't get it and quit. Probably in the first week or so. Thanks Vern Lovic. And to the guy who said there's not much to it: That's the whole point! I learned much more from Jon Kabat-Zinn and others, but not how to meditate. And perhaps Lovic is right, maybe you don't need to know anything else.

This is an outstanding book for beginners learning to meditate. Why? Its a little hard to explain because so much of what is great about this guide is the very subtle things . . but the author seems to have a gift for saying just enough at each step and just the right things. The words are very humble and very wise. Even though he claims not to know or have achieved true enlightenment - - the way this is written makes me believe he is very far along the path. The guide gets right into the practice of meditation in a very practical, achievable and honest way. Many thanks to the author, this has helped me greatly.

I've never written a review before and now I'll never be able to say that again. But this book was so enormously helpful that I wanted to thank Vern for writing it. Thank you so much Vern!!!I've been trying to meditate, on and off, for over 30 years now, sometimes for 2 to 3 hours a day for several years at a time and really never made much progress, even with many different techniques and great attention to sitting posture, etc.I won't go into much detail in terms of what I'm experiencing now but suffice it to say, I'm making progress and am incredibly grateful. One of the most important things that Vern mentions is the non-attachment issue. Many of us are very familiar with the concept but Vern brought it home in a way that just never quite sunk in before. And in meditation I believe it to be crucial. We are so used to having benchmarks for our progress, it's rather foreign to simply, well, be unattached :).If I could give this book 10 stars I would......Thanks again Vern!

Do you really need a certified instructor, who designs for you a custom mantra, or to go to a Buddhist Temple in the Far East to learn this ancient practice? The plain truth is no. Vern Lovic shows us in non-technical terms how to perform the art of meditation and get out of it its healthful benefits. The KISS principle reigns supreme as the author makes it clear that esoteric terms and practices are not necessary to enjoy the benefits of meditation.I like the way meditation is treated as a common-sense practice, totally accessible to the layman, and not to be exclusively reserved for the insiders of some arcane new age movements. The author gives the reader some simple ways of practicing meditation, with an emphasis on breath-focus and concentration, and opens for one the road----whether one should choose to take it or not----to acquiring Jhana, that heavenly experience of earthly bliss, presence, and tranquility.

I love this little book. It is very well explained and right to the point. I like the author's honesty that I was able to feel as I read. Very good for the very beginner like me, which finds meditating a struggle an needed more guidance. Very easy to understand and follow. Thank you.

My son is reading this book for a book report on an inventor. He loves it and is learning so much. This book excites him which makes me happy because He is always saying how much he hates reading.

My first grader loves these books, and the series covers interesting people from all over the spectrum of history. She has quite a collection going and we plan to buy tons more.We got the Gallileo book because she loves space. She is a pretty advanced reader for her age, and I would say this one is a bit of a harder and more complex read than say the Abraham Lincoln book, which she found more relatable and was generally a faster book to finish.This is a deep and well written story however, and has introduced her to all sorts of new people she can obsess over, such as all the Greek philosophers that inspired Gallileo, and other things that were going on in history in his lifetime.We read out of this book each night for 15 minutes, which is about a chapter a night. I listen to my daughter read it and help her with some of the hard words. The story is pretty detailed and I think she has gotten a real sense of satisfaction out of it, now since we are on the last chapter. She might not be absorbing everything they are saying, such as the Catholics vs Protestants, and the push back he got from the Catholic Church despite being a devout follower, however it offers her just enough of a challenge with hard words that she is definitely improving her vocabulary and it is helping her reading aloud.

This would be a great read aloud for any classroom or at home! We read it together as a family (12 year old boy/girl twins and a 10 year old). Everyone was interested, and it led to a lot of discussions. Loved it!

My boys ages 8 & 12 really enjoyed this book. We read it as a part of a space unit study a few weeks ago. They still talk about it and test out his theories on a regular basis. It had enough information to be educational but not dry and boring.

This is a good, brief, readable biography of one of the most important figures in the history of science. Children grade 4 and up should be able to handle it. I also recommend it for a busy adult—in a quick read, the book provides more than enough information to appreciate the impact Galileo had on human scientific progress.

We (children and parents) find these books absolutely fascinating. If adults want a quick snapshot of these famous people, we highly recommend these fun books!

We own twenty books from this series and this has been one of our family’s favorites!

Excellent books for kids. We read all the "big head" books. They are fun for kids, and have great pictures as well.

. The book is second in the Left Behind Series by LaHaye and Jenkins. The series is based on a literal reading of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. There is something exciting going on every five minutes. In the first book millions of people disappear, and the series follows the problems faced by those who are left behind. The main characters correctly guess the disappearances to be the Rapture, where Christ takes his faithful to heaven. After the Rapture there is a huge upswelling of interst in Christ, especially among the Jews, and thousands of conversions. But all this happens as Christians are coping with WWIII, a worldwide earthquake, dodging the Antichrist, and bringing people to Christ. I'm the opposite of a fundamentalist, but these are some of the most exciting and uplifting books I've ever read.

Excellent suspense and great characters lead the way for the sequel of Left Behind and I actually liked better than the first novel. This novel is for anyone that wants to read a great story regardless of spiritual beliefs.The world has been turned upside down by the rapture. Loved ones have vanished and people that are left are asking questions. For Rayford Steele and daughter Chloe and their new friend Cameron "Buck" Williams the answer is clear, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has taking their loved ones to be with Him in Heaven. And now they must survive the horrors that lie ahead. As the Tribulation force must is preparing to survive at any cost they must become face to face with the antichrist Nicolae Carpathia who is already put his plan into motion to rule the world. With the horrors to follow, World War III, disease and natural disasters our heroes are trying to stay ahead of the evil that is Nicolae. This novel does an excellent job of continuing to develop characters and keeping the pace fast and interesting and as I mentioned above is actually has a better pace than book one. This novel continues the relationship between Buck and Chloe which is fun and familiar to those who have been in love.Whether you are a Christian or not I highly recommend this novel and this series. If you are a believer you will find this conforting because you won't have to experience what is coming and what takes place in this novel. If you are still confused or a non believer, I beg you to read carefully and find the Truth. God Bless us all.Grade A+

I had all of the original 12, except for this book, the second in the series. First disappointment was the condition of the dust jacket; small tears in 2 or three places. The original series were 9 & 8/16ths” tall &6 & 6/ 16ths” wide. The book received was8 & 8/16ths” tall & 5 & 14/16ths” wide. So this book purchased was an inch shorter and a half inch shorter in width. Not acceptable.

This whole book series is well written and based on Biblical research and truth, making the fiction scenarios throughout the books very possible & even likely, in my opinion. Regardless if the reader sees the story as possibly happening in real life or not, it's hard to put down! When I first started the series right after "Left Behind" came out years ago, it was difficult to wait for the next one to be published! Both my daughters read them while in college and finished the series as fast as they could. Several friends of mine were reading the series around the same time as I did and we all traded books among us whenever possible. It was the hot topic of conversation whenever we got together. Now my second husband is reading them and could hardly wait for book 2 to arrive after I ordered it! It was a challenge for him to wait a couple days & not go buy it off the shelf someplace!! I had kept all my original books - except book 2, 3 & 5 were missing! Now my oldest daughter wants to start reading this series to her 2 kids when he is finished with the 1st 3 books...& so it goes!

Exciting and extraordinarily well thought out, "Tribulation Force" is both fun and thoughtful and inspiring as well. Some criticize the authors for injecting a heavy dose of romance into the story with this book, but in fact the burgeoning love between Chloe Steele and Buck is handled particularly well and it's not as if Christians are universally called to celibacy. God is the father of love and saw fit to put the first couple together, after all. Yes, Christians need love too! Theologically the authors stay in tune with modern Evangelicals, but in my opinion even Christians from other churches can still derive a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from this moving saga. A great book on its own terms and a compelling lead-in to the next entry in the series, "Nicolae," which promises to be even more exciting. Highly recommended!

One clearly has to read this book in order to follow the story of the series. However, the book is not well written, with many pages taking up seemingly arbitrary story line, only to be followed by a rush job at the end to move the story along. One almost gets the impression of disjointed ghost writers being asked to do little bits which are included at the end. But the styles and story telling of these paragraphs vary from the main book - almost as if the plot is not quite clear.The oddities of the first book hand over here too - e.g. Trying to update the story line in the modern electronic age but not applying the update uniformly --> confusing!

As an avid fan & follower of Barbara's blog, breadandcompanatico.com, I pre-ordered her book and was not disappointed when I received the 841 page volume with 3 attached ribbon bookmarks. The text of the book is easy to read and understand, even for those without background or experience in baking - she injects her expertise in chemistry and the art of baking in a way that makes it very accessible to all. I really appreciated Barbara's explanation about the wide variety of ingredients that can be used to bake - there are flours beyond simple All Purpose and Barbara encourages exploring these other flours as well as other ingredients. Her tips and personal anecdotes are very helpful. Her interviews and sharing of recipes and insights of other bakers adds depth and variety and makes the book a worthwhile investment (unlike other baking books which do not come close to the 300+ recipes that Barbara has in her book). The photos in the book are beautiful and compliment the recipes making it very appealing.As an experienced sourdough baker myself, I can appreciate the sourdough recipes Barbara has included in her book as well as those using bakers yeast. Her Ciabatta recipe is wonderful and works well with my erratic schedule. I am looking forward to baking my way through Crusts. Thank you Barbara Elisi Caracciolo for sharing your passion and expertise!

I will start that I like the book - it has a good description of all the basics needed to start baking and it also has nice encyclopaedic intro of the grains which is important if you are new to it and there are a lot of recipes presented by their owners - professional bakers from around the world which I value because it comes with the credit that the recipe will work. But sometimes I get lost - which recipes are form the author and which from the guest bakers and sometimes there are similar recipes just one after another and it confuses me. The part however I miss the most is the exact measurements of the ingredients in grams or in ounces. Most of the recipes are measured only in cups and spoons and a small part has grams or ounces as well. For me especially when it comes to enriched doughs and sweet tarts, pies and breads this step is very important. Still respect the efforts of the author but I think the cook book serves best when you have control over the recipe which happens only if you can weight exactly the ingredients.
