The 120 Days of Sodom

Review

“Sade’s masterpiece was The 120 Days of Sodom, which has just been published as a Penguin Classic for the first time … the great merit of this edition is the thoroughly excellent translation by [Will] McMorran and [Thomas] Wynn. It has none of the phony archaism of earlier English translations. Instead it is like a window, allowing us to have as clear of view as possible of Sade’s mind and world.”—The Economist“Without in any way giving in to hyperbole, I would say that this translation is a 21st century monument, changing not only the way in which we view the French 18th century, but providing a guide to the present and future.” —Andrew Hussey   “We thought this translation was quite exceptional in its capacity to capture the true voice of this strange and difficult eighteenth-century text, the textual and editorial scholarship of the translators, their wonderful handling of the terminology and the diction of the original, along with the fluency of their translation, and the ways in which it creates for the first time for Anglophone readers a properly accurate version of Sade’s text.” —Ian Patterson

It was time for a new translation, and this one doesn't disappoint. The introduction is detailed and adds a necessary background to the text.

Well it’s definitely NOT for everyone—but if you’re into darker, more twisted stuff, this is a sort of classicly talked about title. The Marquis’s writing is gripping and vivid without being as overly dramatic as many other notorious books in this genre are, but that’s not to say it’s dry either. I woukdn’t recommend this book for most people, but for those who can handle it, I definitely do.

Wasn’t able to finish. I knew what it was about, but it was quite boring and disgusting.

This is a thick read that's well worth it if you have the stomach for it. Shows you that lasciviousness hasn't changed all that much.

Lotta crazy stuff happens in this book. If you enjoy reading about funny stories then check this out. Very good read!

The book was not what i anticipated. Lots of hompedophilia...

Thanks-no problems-fast service-great seller

Great read. Truly one of the weirdest books I've ever read.

I have been really impressed by some of Klein's previous writings. However, this book is too obsessed with demonizing Capitalism without recognizing human behavior as an actor. In a footnote she makes overpopulation a moral right of the helpless poor, not even recognizing the sexist oppression that is part of the culture of overpopulation The struggle against human class division and a focus on social justice are very important political issues but they may be used to ignore our part in the mass extinction and mistreatment of species. The Anthropocene continues regardless of our political righteousness.I am shocked by the people who find Klein's prattle to be so meaningful, and timely. Global warming has been an understood science since the 1960s. While the extremist global warming deniers have been made to be a political force by the fossil fuel industry, the greater problem comes from the tragedy-of-the-commons. Almost no one wants to make the sacrifices needed. Blaming Capitalism won't help.I hope that Naomi Klein discovers Ecological Economics and brings it to her readers. Ecological Economics may have shades of Capitalism in it. But beauty is in the eve of the beholder, we can redefine capitalism. I would have given this book one star but I actually don't want to piss-off other environmentalists. We need to proceed with maximum speed. Capitalism need not be a monolith, it can be a transitional tool. But define what you want. We get to define the future. Reading a book or articles on Ecological Economics would be much more productive than this book.

This may well be one of the most important books of the decade. It may also be one of the most depressing. It is informationally (is that a word?) very dense -- very dense. I have written computer models for the past twenty years and know a bit about their limitations, and about their value. Though this book is disturbing, I think it gives a fair assessment of the research regarding climate change and global warming.

A very interesting book which I found well researched and informative if a little repetitive but hey its impassioned too. I found the work fired me up on the issues and made me want to buy and read the author's previous work the shock doctrine which is equally good, though the climate book has a more personal note to it and more insight into the author's own psychology through her story of trying to bring a child into this world with all that entails; after what she has written in the book. The writing is good, the facts plentiful and the arguments cleverly made and well laid out in what turns out to be an issue which can't just easily be dismissed, after all we just had one months rain in 2 days here with more to come and that isn't normal so its got make you think and wonder what are our real options on this climate issue and which way we should turn, if one thing is clear, you can't take the planet and its weather for granted anymore. There are solutions and these are brought up and examined in this book. Better start doing something soon the future won't wait for us to think everything out first. Great work by this author I look forward to her future work and wish her all the best with the new family.

Naomi Klein does not mince words as she shows how our lives of wealth and grasping for more wealth is contributing to climate change. She insists that our capitalism must change in order to slow global warming. She has good suggestions for how this might be done. But it will annoy those who love their air conditioning and cars and air travel. It is not an easy read, but we need to pay attention.

This book makes very clear that we are facing a planetary disaster and have to fix this problem ASAP. There are many steps to take but if enough of us support this effort we will succeed, and in so doing make the planet much more livable for all of us. The powers that be want to deny that humans have anything to do with the problem. They are typically interested in preserving their own wealth and power. But it is crystal clear from scientific evidence that human activity associated with fossil fuels has created the problem. If we act now we can replace fossil fuels with environmentally safe renewable sources of energy, which will also create many jobs and redistribute wealth in a more equitable way. If we fail to act soon we will not be able to stop the heating up of our planet and the results will be horrendous.

This book not only explains the what of the current carbon-climate problem, it explains the why, including why it is proving so difficult to make the transition to renewable energy. And while it fully delves the downside of our current trajectory and the vested interests that keep us there, Klein ends up making a strong case for optimism in the midst of adversity. Its an optimism that is rooted in the belief of widespread grassroots activism as an antidote to unregulated capitalism, and as a means to restore the public commons. This book is a key discourse in the unfolding dialogue spurred by climate change, and a must-read for the escalating numbers that are adding their voice to this most vital conversation.

As a group of 12 and a wide range of ages, we really enjoyed the time we spent reading about Hank. Enjoyed lots of laughs and some talk about if he is as smart as he thinks. The younger members of the party enjoyed reading them on the way home.

i loved these books when I was a child and my children like to listen to them. I am also getting them on Kindle so my daughter can read to me

This is a good book which is slightly challenging for my 2nd Grade daughter. It allows her to learn and understand new words while providing a story even adults can enjoy. My 4 year old seem to enjoy me reading it to her all though most of the puns and hidden joke are still over her head. I read about 16-17 of these myself from 3rd grade to 5th or 6th and enjoyed them all. It was all we had in our school library at the time. Normally I am not much of a reader. These books were an exception to that!

Hank is great! Product as described!

My 7 YO boy loves this, and so do I. Great story line, great audible if you go that route. Good clean fun

These stories continue to be entertaining and fresh. Our grandchildren love them as much, if not more, as their parents did.

I love this series of children's books. I bought this for my little granddaughter and I hope she loves Hank as much as I do.

Fantastic books for all ages!!

"I Have Lived a Thousand Years: Growing Up in The Holocaust" is well written and informative true story from a survivor of anti-Semitism that was present in 1938 Europe. Livia Bitton-Jackson carefully describes the increasing hostility and prejudice toward her and her family as they tried to live peaceably in her rural hometown of Samorin, Czechoslovakia, on the banks of the Danube River, at the edge of the Carpathian foothills. Livia was a young thirteen year old girl when she and her father, mother and older brother, and her aunt, were harassed and eventually were rounded up, along with her Jewish community and sent to various Jewish ghettos. Her father,Mark Friedmann, was sent to a Hungarian labor camp, where he eventually perished. Livia, whose birth name was Ellvira "Elli" Friedmann, her mother, Laura, her 17 year old brother, Bubi, and her mother's older sister, Serena, were all sent, by cattle railroad cars, to the infameous death camp, Auschwiz,Poland.I learned many things about life and death. Family and community. Survival in the face of impossible living conditions. Elli's stories are of extreme prejudice, harassement, arrests, torture, murder and a palatable evil darkness that over took her Jewish community. Elli's stories are also stories of family unity, faith, laughter, hope, endurance, loyality, courage and the deep down human will to survive no matter what evil comes your way. Elli's story is also one of triumph and love in the face of overwhelming odds, and of never giving up. This is a well written inspirational story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the human spirit of hope and courage in the face of adversity.

I purchased this book and thought that I was getting the winner of the Christopher Award. I discovered later that there is a much longer version. Readers need to purchase "Elli:Coming of Age in the Holocaust." There is such a big difference with so many details that were left out of "I Have Lived a Thousand Years" that I was able to read this shorter version and about a month later read the original version and not feel like I was reading the same thing over.

Fascinating. I more fully understand now that at least a lot of the slave labor- i.e. those who did not go immediately to the gas- must have been mainly just a means of torturing these Jews by those that hated them. Having a starved 13 year old girl and her starved, debilitated mother- and thousands more like her- working with a shovel on a hill side in Poland must have cost much more than the Reich benefited. The building and guarding and maintenance of the camps, the running of the trains, how much could any of this have aided the war effort? I think rather quite the opposite. The other thing I have come to realize more than in the past is how much of this evil was accomplished not just by the Nazis, but by other counties that fully supported the extermination of the Jews. Think about it: the persecution starts in her home town (in Hungary?) years before the Nazis invade. Many of the cruelest camp guards were Hungarian, Lithuanian, Latvian and other non-Germans. This is also confirmed in another book I am reading, "The Good Old Days". The record is very clear: many, if not most, of the Jews who who were beaten to death or shot after digging their own graves were murdered by the people of the nations(such as Lithuania) Germany had just invaded, while the Germans just watched. And as the various town's citizens watched and cheered. It wasn't just the Germans. They had a lot of help with the slaughter of the Jews from the nations they invaded. But, this is a helpful book in educating about what happened.

I don't think any of us can fully understand what the Jews in Nazi Germany went through. This book tells the horrors of what Ellie Friedman's family went through during the last year of WWII. I was aware of these attrocities, but I was not aware of what they went through after they were liberated. It was like the world had come to an end during their imprisonment, and terrible things kept happening after they were freed. The attitudes of some of their so-called "good neighbors" who would not give them back their possessions when they got back to their devastated house. Windows were taken away from the houses, including the hinges. Human excrement piled on the floor in each room. Not all of the Germans were hateful to them on their return. Some brought food and clothing to share with them...those were the truly good Germans who were appalled at the treatment and murders of the Jews. I would absolutely recommend this book. It is always good to know the truth, and stories written by those who lived it are real eye-openers, and a warning that these things should never happen again.

"I Have Lived a Thousand Years" was one of the most interesting and exhilarating books I have read in a long time. I decided to read this book for my English class in school based on reviews and it did not disappoint. The story is about a young teenage girl's journey through the Holocaust from being captured to surviving Auschwitz to being freed. The book is a true story as the author is the main character of the book. Everything from the plot to the details to the flow of the book kept me entertained and enthralled the whole time. Each time I picked up the book to read, it was nearly impossible to put it down. The most interesting part of the book, in my opinion, was learning about everything that happened from first-hand experience. Truly being able to see how cruel the Nazis were and how terrible the conditions were was eye-opening. Obviously, I knew it was bad, but not that bad. I rated this book four out of five stars because at some points it felt a bit rushed and a little more detail could have been added. Other than that, this book was extremely well written and I would suggest it to anyone that enjoys Holocaust stories or just a good book in general.

I have a 13-year-old granddaughter and I cannot imagine a young girl having all this happening to her. Ellis is just an amazing young woman. I have told so many to read this. I’m now reading the follow up book!
