Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper: How Innovation Keeps Proving the Catastrophists Wrong

Review

“Don't be misled by Robert Bryce's very breezy style. His new book makes important and positive observations about the world's energy future. You don't have to agree with every one of his attitudes or conclusions to hope that the reporting and arguments in the book are taken seriously, and that the innovators and start-ups he vividly describes get the support they need.” —James Fallows"[Bryce's] new book constitutes a direct assault against the policies of "degrowth" advanced by those who peddle what he calls "collapse anxiety". The book is also a sustained argument against the fundamentally pessimistic worldview that underlies those policies. . . . The claim that we can and should replace fossil fuels with renewables such as wind and solar is, Bryce says, a "damnable lie" that obscures the far more important question of what we should do to make more energy available to more people, especially 'the more than two billion people who are still living in abject energy poverty."—John Daniel Davidson, National Review“The author of four books on oil and energy, Mr. Bryce has written a new book well worth reading…Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper…captures the headlong rush of Western culture's endless drive for ever better technology. It is an extraordinary impulse that has created a world in which more people live longer and more comfortably than ever before.”—Fred Andrews, New York Times“For years, Robert Bryce has been calling for rationality on energy policy. In this book, Bryce goes beyond energy to explain why the innovation that drives entrepreneurs is the way of the future. I'm an unapologetic capitalist. Reading Smaller Faster has only fortified my belief that the best way to address poverty is through entrepreneurial capitalism that produces more innovation and progress.”—John Mackey, co-founder and co-CEO, Whole Foods Market, and co-author of Conscious Capitalism“Robert Bryce may be our finest observer of the energy scene. Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper displays all the virtues -- the contacts, the technical savvy, the wit and clear thinking – that make Bryce indispensable.” —Charles R. Morris, author of The Dawn of Innovation and Comeback"A book brimming with well-founded enthusiasm about the amazing present and the prospects for a more amazing future...exploding with fascinating energy facts and...super-fun to read....Bryce takes his appreciation of innovation and uses it to illuminate the past, present, and future of innovation across the board."—Forbes“So what went wrong — or, rather, right? Why is the human race in much better shape than it was 200, 100, or 50 years ago? Robert Bryce reminds us of the answers in his sprightly new book and promises that even better times lie ahead…Bryce's new book is an enlightening stroll down the sunny side of the street.” —Hiawatha Bray, the Boston Globe“Engrossing survey”—Arthur Herman, the Wall Street Journal“A celebration of innovations that have produced cheaper and more abundant energy, faster computing, lighter vehicles and other technological benefits…..Bryce [is a] booster for business and technology; he makes many intriguing arguments in this ‘rejoinder to the doomsayers [and] rebuttal to the catastrophists who insist that disaster lurks just around the corner.'”—Kirkus Reviews

Bryce's premise is basically, "humans are smart - we'll figure it out, we always do". I agree and enjoyed Bryce's examples of human ingenuity, which he pulls from multiple industries. Bryce makes great points countering what he calls "catastrophists", showing in one example how the "end of oil" has been predicted over and over again for the last hundred years. You'll come away more at ease with the state of the world and a bit more optimistic. Overall I really enjoyed the book but Bryce, who is a self-proclaimed optimist, at times comes off pretty negative when talking about folks he disagrees with, President Obama and Amory Lovins in particular. It's unfortunate since Lovins is another optimist who embraces efficiency and many of the same ideas Bryce promotes. Definitely worth reading - I look forward to reading more of Bryce's books.

Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper is a fascinating examination of the process and progress of innovation. Author Robert Bryce has picked a wide range of examples, from cellphones and computer chips to steam engines and Tour de France bicycles, explaining how each of these became smaller, faster, lighter, denser or cheaper, and often all of the above. Bryce writes exceptionally well and is able to explain concepts that are quite complex in very readable, easily understandable prose. No concept is more crucial to his narrative that that of density, especially as applied to energy. Thin diffuse sources especially solar, wind and biofuels have become popular with politicians and the media, and are touted as the answers to all energy-related issues. Bryce shows that these energy fads are impractical largely because they all lack density and therefore need enormous spaces to replace even one coal-fired electric power plant. One can only hope that politicians read the book and move toward more effective energy policies as result. While Bryce shows that solar and wind cannot be the answer for the world's energy needs, he does not simply endorse the status quo. In fact, he sees the future of electric power as a shift from coal to natural gas in the near term and eventually from gas to nuclear power (or as he calls it, N2N). Bryce is a technological optimist and he is expecting advances in nuclear energy to make reactors smaller and above all, cheaper in the years ahead. Bryce makes the case for nuclear power effectively. Because nuclear power emits no carbon dioxide, he regards it as the only realistic option that would reduce any consequences from climate change while at the same time providing reliable electricity to people everywhere. So often books about technology are grim tales that foresee potential catastrophe and conflict. Not Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper. It is a fine book, with a positive message about technology and its potential to better the lives of everyone on Earth.

A pleasure to read. Mr. Byrce has always educated while he entertains. His wordcraft is enlightening and stimulating.Accessibility to information across the globe ensures a continuity in the innovative process while opening more minds to greater longing for more knowledge. The Khan Academy is the case in point. The simple refutation of 'alternative energy' strategies with the physics of 'energy density' tells more than all the political diatribes against our current monarchy could hope to say. The real challenge for the energy industry is the storage issue. When and how this applied science problem is solved has virtually nothing to do with top down management, everything to do with innovation. Whether these solutions flow from think tanks or individuals is less important than the depth of today's playing fields, outside of government. Bryce speaks to that depth with candor.Bryce demonstrates the links between innovation and accessibility clearly. His, and my, challenge is the constant warfare between facts and fear. It is far easier to sell fear than demonstrate facts. So be it.

This is a very important piece of work. Morrow very diligently excavates, examines, and parses every statement, interview, and passing comment from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in an attempt to apportion credit and blame to these titanic creators. It's an engaging read, like a great police procedural. However, the author's attempts to claim objectivity are as transparent as Sue Storm: he says as much in the introduction, having been an expert witness for the Kirby clan in a seminal lawsuit. This is too bad; all of the Kirby enthusiasts enter this complex arena with a Skurge-size axe to grind. Also, there's a Mole Man-esque myopia (ok, I'll stop) about what makes comics--particularly the Marvel Age of Comics--so memorable. It's not just the action sequences or the panel-to-panel conflict; it's the characterizations, the interior monologues, the dialogue, the ongoing story lines, the catch phrases. There's no discussion about, say, the still-resonant Spider-Man#50, which Kirby had nothing to do with, let alone the innumerable soap operas, classics tag lines, and personal dramas that must of have been Stan's sole purview. And what's wrong with being the promotional voice of Marvel? Stan's Soapbox, small and large, was what told a generation of comic fans that they were to be respected and shared a deep personal commonality. Weighed against, say, Kirby's turgid, impenetrable Fourth World universe, I think Stan's vision for comics was more transformative and inclusive, when the day is done. Of course, Stan's passing, which was not anticipated by the author, makes this all the more poignant. I'd ask fans of the Universe--rather than Kirby partisans--what made the Universe so memorable and made it feel like a special club all their own. And a lot of that has to do with Stan.

I'm a sucker for these "behind the scenes" history of comics style books, especially Marvel history. Good stuff. It's obviously slanted towards the Pro-Kirby argument, but the author does his best to remain neutral and gives quotes supporting both sides of the "who created what" argument that's gone on for decades. When the author speculates something, or makes educated guesses, it is noted as such.I'd read/seen several of the quotes included in this book (mostly Stan Lee's) in various places over the years, MMW intros, interviews, etc. But they do a SUPER AMAZING exhaustive job on researching each key point in Marvel's history in an effort to root out exactly who contributed what. The book also contains insight and quotes from a who's who of all time classic comic creators besides Lee & Kirby, including Joe Simon, Roy Thomas, John Severin, Wally Wood, misc members of the Marvel staff in the 60s and more. They even dig deep in to letters that Lee wrote to fans back in the day with responses to letters published in the letter's columns. Like I said, exhaustive research. Well done!

No matter what your position is on the question of who created the Marvel Universe; Kirby or Lee, you will find this book filled with interesting tidbits about what went into it's creation. This book is chocked full of photos, art, and documents. It gives you real insight into the world of making comics from the 40's to the 70's. It is a good read and I highly recommend it.

Being a fan of Marvel Comics for over 40 years, I’ve always wondered about the genus is of their characters and the thoughts and motivations of the people behind all of their iconic characters. This book gives month by month detailed information From the people who were there. You can see the passion of the author in every page, as conversations are documents from every side possible. If you’ve ever wondered how Stan Lee and Jack Kirby felt in the moment from year to year, this is your resource.

...so well told. Black Bolt and his ironic screaming of the title on the splash page prepares the reader for a great ride. I'm sure, by now, everyone is set in their 'who said what/did what' point of view when it comes to Kirby and Lee and the story of getting proper credit and compensation for their work and this book will do little to change anyone's mind. However, it elegantly and eloquently gives us all of the quotes (in context) for the players in order to once again, revisit this sorry saga. With added input from Ditko quotes and many others, it gives a good account of this murky story. The book is the usual great quality expected from the publisher. So, 5 stars. Can't recommend it enough.

As with virtually all TwoMorrows books, this book is an incredibly well-researched and thorough examination of its topic... one that's created some of the most passionate and fiery debates in all of comics fandom.Stan Lee's versions of events in the creation of the Marvel Universe is the one most commonly accepted as the truth, despite being refuted by numerous co-creators such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Wallace Wood, Stan Goldberg, Dick Ayers, Joe Orlando, Gil Kane, and others. This book allows you to hear all sides of this fascinating subject from a variety of attributed sources.I can't tell you what an incredible package this is -- it would take an ordinary fan years to track down all these interviews and articles. To have it in one handy guide is a dream-come-true for anyone interested in this subject. And while the author certainly has his point of view and speculates at times, the beautiful thing is that you can read the quotes themselves and make up your own mind. It really is something else and a "must have" for any fan of Stan, Jack, and the Marvel universe.

A tour de force month by month depiction of the working relationship of Kirby and Lee told in their own words from meticulously researched quotes from the time and in much later interviews about the times.Amazing amount of hard work to put this together. Gives an interesting and nuanced view of what actually happened during the years of the creation of the Marvel Univetse. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Marvel, comics, or the iconic characters that revolutionized an industry

A very enjoyable read. Thanks for pulling this ton of research together, folks.

“This small, elegant book is filled with the wisdom and artistry of a great man. This collection of Morihei Ueshiba’s sayings and poetry resonates with deep meaning, making this a gem of a book. The book itself is of very high quality—compact and well-bound, with clear print and beautifully reproduced images of Ueshiba’s calligraphy. A CD of the book, read in a clear, calm voice, is also a very nice inclusion. Okay, I'll admit it. I picked up this little book after watching TWD's characters Morgan and Eastman 'redirect' attacks with their Jo staves like complete badasses. I'll also admit that only a Walking Dead fan would get the title of this review.I'm fairly certain this is the exact book is used in Season 6, Episode 4 "Here's Not Here" of AMC's The Walking Dead. If you want to see how an Aikido 'master' handles zombies in a post-appocolyptic setting, check out that episode. This book will not teach you Aikido but imparts the philosophy and wisdom of the founder Morihei Ueshiba. The compact size of the book makes it easy to slip in a pocket and get a daily dose of poetic and inspiring prose when your day allows. Each page has one or two sentences on it that are quick to read but require me to spend time contemplating the deeper meaning.Great supplement to The Secret Teachings of Aikido also by Ueshiba or even as an Aikido student!

Read a handful of pages every night. Its a super tiny book which took me by surprise, but very cute. Sometimes i carry it in my back pocket. It reminds me of the whole purpose as to why we are here, and truly.. the art of peace with the world, our surroundings, and ourselves.

New York Times BestsellerThe real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. So taught the great Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969), founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a disciple Ueshiba called the “Art of Peace.” It offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict, and he believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, as well as in our interactions with society. These succinct and pithy teachings are drawn from his talks and writings. The collection is compiled by the renowned modern Aikidoist John Stevens, a disciple of Ueshiba.

I have the paperback and the small hard cover edition, but like the Kindle edition best. The extra two parts are solid, especially the history of Morihei Ueshiba. The art work is small but nicely incorporated. Good value for about $5. The content is of course classic and needs no comment for those have read even a little of the art of peace.

I absolutely love this book. It's fairly small and fits in my pocket. I carry it every with me and have read it a half dozen times already. It's really just over a hundred pages of sayings and teachings, but it is a very enlightening book. It keeps me at a level head and keeps me being a loving and kind person.

Awesome little tiny book with lots of powerful quotes. Like many other reviewer's, I ordered the book after seeing it on The Walking Dead Series. No regrets here. Powerful quotes to get you in tune with the universe and what you wish to accomplish in life.

This book is eye opening in many ways. I am by no means religious, at least by typical standards which kind of interoperate certain sections much more different than I'm sure most who go on to read this book. The Art of Peace is a beautiful book that first gives you some background on the original author and how they developed into the person that introduces the Art of Peace and Aikido to the world, and then does a very good job of opening your eyes to see what it is really all about. I feel as if this book has allowed me to look at life and interaction with things and people around me in a completely different way than how I did before I read this book. I will definitely be reading this a few more times to further understand the fundamentals along with reading more material that brings more definition and angle of appearance towards aikido and the Art of Peace.

The edition of “The Art of Peace” that I read is divided into three parts. Part I is a brief biography of Morihei Ueshiba, who was known as Ō-sensei to Aikidō practitioners and other admirers. Part II contrasts the art of war to Ueshiba’s art of peace. Part III is a collection of aphorisms and brief statements outlining the art of peace.Ueshiba is the founder of Aikidō, a martial art that was derived in part from Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, but which is distinct from that art in many ways. (e.g. the lack of set forms and emphasis on randori.) Along with Jigorō Kanō, Gichin Funakoshi, and a few others, Ueshiba is one of the pioneers of gendai budō, modern Japanese martial arts that take as their primary aim non-bellicose objectives like sport and self-defense. This is in contrast to the koryū budō (kobudō) which evolved primarily for war fighting. In contrast to Kanō’s Judō, which was first and foremost a competitive sport, Ueshiba’s Aikidō offered a particular approach to self-defense that was purely defensive and in which movement was harmonized to the opponent’s actions so as to perpetrate the least violence possible. The biographic portion of the book is intriguing, but on a few occasions drifts from biography to hagiography. I feel that the suggestion of supernatural abilities does a disservice in the telling of Ueshiba’s story. By all accounts, Ueshiba was an accomplished and highly skilled martial artist, and I would like to read a full biography of his life (a biography exists, but I can’t comment on how well written it is yet.) Given Ueshiba’s pacifistic views, it would be easy to dismiss him as a pie-in-the-sky idealist who had no idea of the realities of the world. I don’t believe that is the case. However, when the biography tells stories of god-like superpowers, it makes it hard to take the man seriously as a martial artist. Either Ueshiba was skilled as an illusionist / mentalist (a distinct possibility) or some of the stories were embellished to deify the man. The story that comes to mind is one in which Ueshiba voluntarily faced a firing squad and emerged unharmed due to either ninja-like or Hollywood vampire movie style actions. This story is attributed to one of his students, Gozo Shioda, who passed away in the 1990’s.We may get an indication of the roots of this appeal to the supernatural in an early statement about Ueshiba’s childhood fascination with individuals like En no Gyoja and Kukai who are themselves attributed supernatural abilities in stories. Ueshiba is clearly a man of faith. He suggests life should be lived on basis of 70 percent faith and 30 percent science. Full disclosure: I’m more skeptical than Descartes, and obviously favor an outlook more firmly rooted in science and rationality.Part two includes extensive quotes from Ueshiba himself. It contrasts the arts of war with Aikidō in mental and physical aspects. A core theme of the book is that the martial arts shouldn’t be about learning to die, but rather learning to live. Ueshiba criticizes the past Shoguns who used the art of war to control people. Ueshiba’s views on the purpose of martial arts are stated in this part. From a physical point of view, Ueshiba emphasizes the lack of forms in Aikidō (Bruce Lee echoed similar sentiments on this subject.) There is an interesting comparison of Ueshiba to swordsman and Zen master Tesshu Yamaoka (about whom John Stevens also wrote a biography.)Part three reads like the work of an ancient yogi in places, and, in other places, offers the stern admonitions to train hard that one would expect from a martial arts teacher. A recurring theme is that the martial artist should purge himself of pettiness, be it in the form of being judgmental, materialistic, fearful, selfish, or malicious. He goes as far as to say, “Be grateful even for hardship, setbacks, and bad people.”Another theme is that one should strive to be natural and to make one’s movement natural. Ueshiba’s advice in this book is about virtue and the mind, and rarely strays into the subject of physical tactics. It does offer a little advice about types of distancing, where one should place one’s gaze, the power of circular movement, as well as discussing technique in the abstract. This is not a criticism. There are other books to learn more about physical technique. However, one should be aware that if one would like to know what Aikidō looks like, this isn’t the book for you. This thin book provided me with a great deal to think about. I’d recommend it for martial artists, as well as for those interested in the life of this extraordinary man.
