I don't think I can finish this book. It caught my eye in the Christian bookstore and since I recently lost my dog, I thought it might be helpful. What I am finding is very little about his dog and more long preachy paragraphs about things that just seem to randomly come to his mind. Many long bible quotes and he seems to go off on tangents. Something I found rather objectionable was his first dog, Charlie, I believe his name was, was left to be put down by his wife while he was out of town. I skipped thru to the chapter titled "Good-bye", and I see once again, he said he knew Hannah was dying and he'd never see her again, but what did he do? He left town again for work, left his dog to die without him. I really can't get past that. He put work before the dog he claims meant so much to him.I tried to pick this book up and continue reading but it's just more preaching of his random thoughts. I feel like his dog is an afterthought, like he's trying to fit her life into an already perceived notion of a book and he needed her to make it sound legitimate, because who wants a book full of his random preachy thoughts.......no one.

I’m often suspicious of biographies. Most of the time I wonder how well the author got to know the subject of the biography. Did they get to interview the subject personally? Was the subject completely honest with the biographer? Does the biographer have an agenda or viewpoint that contradicts with the real story?I don’t have any of those concerns regarding Dave Burchett’s new book, Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss, and Grace. Though Dave is writing about Hannah, and later Maggie, he’s telling their story from his perspective – that of a best friend. Because Hannah and Maggie are man’s best friend – dogs. Dave has written what I think is the best biography of an animal as told from a human viewpoint that I’ve ever read.I’ve not stopped thinking about what the vet said after giving Dave the emotional news of a terminal diagnosis for this beloved furry friend. The doctor explained that Hannah didn’t know she had cancer and would live each remaining day with all the life she had in her. “Dogs have no fear of death, so they live in the moment. Enjoy each moment that you have.” What began Dave’s journey of observing and learning from Hannah has the potential to shake you to the core of how you live life. The lessons he learned along the way are for all of us.The freedom and grace Dave discovered through the months that remained for Hannah will shatter your view of rules, legalistic morality, anger, and even death. It’s not a fun story. I knew what was going to happened to Hannah, yet I still cried as Dave recounted the end of Hannah’s life.Initially that was the end of the book. But, in the way that God always gets the last laugh, there would be more to the story. Maggie. A new rescue dog. An opportunity for Dave to teach someone else the lessons of forgiveness and joy he had learned from Hannah. Could a dog eager to destroy some good furniture and quick to hide in shame learn about unconditional love? Could a wild animal discover freedom on a leash?This is a book of humor, faith, the path of loss, and the journey of rediscovering joy. I never learned those lessons from the fish, lizards, and hermit crabs we had as pets. It’s only been with dogs that I’ve experienced those same lessons. Dogs have something to teach us. It may even be why God created them in the first place. Dave knows that and uses his own experiences to get us closer to the heart of God.I suspect at the end of this year I’ll be saying STAY was my favorite book of the year. I highly recommend you get a copy and read it soon. This is a book dog lovers – all animal lovers. It is a book I think every Christian should read – and those who are on the journey of seeking God. It’s also a book for everyone who just loves to read.I suspect Dave’s words will become your own if you read STAY. “Hannah’s journey has changed me. I am more aware of living fully in each moment. I try to live in the freedom of God’s grace. I am accepting with gratitude what each day brings me. I try to find joy even when I don’t feel at my best. Hannah’s graceful and uncomplaining acceptance of pain, and ultimately death, challenges me to become bolder than I have ever been.”

The book is written from the first person, and as journal entries I loved that about the book. This book was fantastic.During Joni’s cancer treatments, Hannah stayed by their side and seems to “read” her owners behaviors and their love. Giving them some comfort and peace during each treatment and after her surgery. Then sweet Hannah was diagnosed with cancer.They chose a course of treatment that would only make Hannah comfortable and keep her out of pain.During those next few months they saw a lifetime of love, and grace in the way that Hannah lived her life. Putting their needs first. Hannah lived in the moment and was free. One of the best quotes in the book was when the vet told them this “dogs don’t fear death, they live in the moment”After Hannah’s illness took her, Dave thought he would never be able to love again, however, when he saw sweet Savannah’s face, he fell in love.When they brought Savannah home, they knew that her name was too close to Hannah’s so they eventually changed her name to Maggie. In doing so they learned that Maggie, didn’t really realize her name well. When they enrolled Maggie in obedience class, they learned the things she needed. In doing so they learned Maggie needed a leader, someone to take her and tell her yes, no, sit, stay, the commands in every dog’s life, as well as teach her to walk on a leash and guide.Dave took each lesson that he learned and related it back to the Bible with a timely Bible verse, or story from the Bible and this book became a lesson, literally on grace, and humility. Love, loss and learning.Learning from your dog is a very gracious thing because of what they can teach you. Turning that back and about Jesus Christ and how much He sacrificed for us.What a blessing this book was for me. While I love my dog with all my heart and they are treated basically like royalty in my home, I was able to see that every day they give us everything they have every minute of their life.God gives us everything we have, we just have to accept it. Having grown up in a small town in rural America and lived most of my adult life in a house that sat a few thousand meters from its nearest neighbor, I moved to Beijing, a city of 22 million, where personal space is, by necessity, simply non-existent. If you can’t get used to the idea of your face being mere inches away from the face of the stranger standing next to you on a crowded subway, you won’t survive.Looking back, however, learning to live without personal space was more a process of personal liberation than an accommodation to my new reality. Never in my sixty-three years have I learned more about myself or become more comfortable in my own skin.The book is a chronicle of philosophy on the topic of silence. But rather than just summarizing that discussion, Kagge applies it to everything from exploring the underground world of New York City to the appreciation of art and music.Which is pretty bold, when you think about it. I haven't listened to music on a hike in years.Around the time I gave up on music during hikes and walks, I was turned onto minimalism. While minimalism and silence may not go hand-in-hand, they are both ideas and concepts that have come on with a maturity and better understanding of what is important in the world. I find myself now teaching my daughters about the importance of little things, and how big they can seem and how much we can learn. Looking at two blades of grass on the surface sounds boring, but when you get down to the details it is fascinating. Silence is the same.This book was recommended by my father who is a wise 68. He is one of the wisest people I know--so I bought the book and read it last week. It's a potentially quick read, but that's dangerous. A book like this needs to be taken slowly and digested. Philosophical at it's core, you need to allow yourself the time to really soak up what Kagge is saying... if you can do that, you'll be better for it. You'll appreciate things you never considered before, and life will be richer.

Of the many diverse books I’ve read in my 77 years “Silence...” is the only one I’ve felt compelled to read more than once. The first time, I found it a quick read and it’s 33 short stories exceptionally engaging. I started read two the next day and found myself slowing down to think about each story, to marvel how each one relates to me and my life. I immediately started read three — catch this — at 2:30 in the morning, slowing down automatically as I contemplate what certain elements of each story are telling me where to and how to seek and practice silence in my daily living. And just when I thought I thought I was finished with this little book, l found myself in read number four, as I use “Silence” to help me meditate. Thank you, Erving Kagge. If you’re in nursing school you know mental health has a lot of gray areas. It’s not like pharm or Med surg where it’s “this is right and this is wrong”. This book helped me SIGNIFICANTLY to understand WHY certain answers were correct/incorrect. It helped me to think critically a different way than I’m used to. I failed my first mental health test. The second & third test after that I got OVER 90%. I did all the questions In this book under the section we were learning, read through the notes ONCE. And that’s IT. DEFINITELY get this book if you’re struggling in mental health or afraid of what’s to come in mental health. Best decision I’ve made in nursing school so far.

This book has been so helpful prepping for psych exams. The questions are really similar to our test questions and the rationales are great.

Not only does it give you the correct answer w rational it gives you the wrong answer and tells you why it’s wrong I have learned a lot from this book it’s a great resource

Some days ago, I have received the book Excel VBA 24-Hour Trainer for a review, upon a request from my site. After all, as far as it has all started with VBA for me, I am always interested in the latest trends on the subject. 'he book is a second edition, so I thought it would be useful to read it.And I was not mistaken. The book is great! :)First of all, it is not just a book - it is more like a whole package, learning you step by step to write useful code. The videos from the book and its code are available on line without any registration.These are must-see resources! (Available at the wrox site, just make a quick search there). The videos are really valuable, due to the following 2 reasons - they are free and not boring! Indeed, the guy behind the camera is obviously having fun and enjoying what he is doing. Check it out by yourself, as I mentioned they are free :) Furthermore, after spending some time with them you can decide for yourself whether or not this is what you need!The book consists of 33 lessons in 5 parts. Each lesson (without the starting 2-3) ends with a to-do task and the solution of this task is explained in the video. Furthermore, additional 15 advanced video lessons are available online, with their code. The advanced videos are really fun (as fun as coding in Excel can go) and a must see - e.g. the guy introduces cell blinking in video #5 and asks you to double think whether this is really needed. Anyhow, he comes with useful examples. Later in video #6 he tells a story of a picture, while putting it in a comment in Excel. Indeed, the videos are worthy!Let's start with the review of the book:The first two parts are quite normal and well-written. I liked the unique way of introducing the OOP in lesson 5. At first I thought that it was pretty early and it may be scary for a beginner, but when I read the lesson, it was OK.In the first two parts, one can see the ability of the author to produce interesting information even for people with experience in VBA (like myself)! I saw that there is a difference of 100 years between "10/10/29" and "10/10/30" :), or that one may refer to ranges of cells this way – "Cells(2,"E").Value" (so far I only knew the other 2 ways of referring). I still remember how I was counting the alphabet for the column letter index some 2 years ago :)Later, in part 3 one learns all the features a programmer should know to make use of VBA. I, personally liked the idea of comparing data in multiple cells together. E.g., imagine that you want to find  a duplicate row in a given table. The algorithm in the book is to write a macro (or a sub, call it as you wish), which unites the data from the row into one cell and then checks whether there is similar data in the column. Clear and simple!With part 4 the real power of VBA is revealed - User Forms and controls are well explained, the OOP is introduced and furthermore, it is explained why OOP is really a must for a VBA programmer. The case was that, if you need to write a functions and properties for 5 or 6 objects, you may easily maintain it by yourself, but when it comes to 100 it is not that easy. And when you want to make the number of objects a variable, then you cannot go without OOP. And classes. Thus, you have to learn them :)The last part looks into interactions with other office applications. I liked that the author has explained late and early binding quite simply. If you are still wondering what is what, then with 2 words - late binding does not need to know the version of the application (e.g. Office 12 or 11 or 14), while early binding needs to know it and thus can make problems if the user changes versions. Early binding is faster.Tiny minus: Let's be a little negative, too much sugar on this review would probably not look credible! (but the book really deserves all the sugar from my keyboard and even more for going one step further with the videos and the way of presentation skills of the author) :) Thus, there is a point for improvement - the provided code is not indented anywhere. Neither in the book, in the video or in the online files. It would be great, if you could spare 4-5 hours and fix the code in the online files. There are enough good tools to automate it and it looks better.Pretty much that is it - last words - go for the book, if you are working with Excel, it will help you! Simple & understandable language, showing you the magic of VBA! :)

I tried to learn VBX from this book. It is very detailed for some specific topics that may or may not useful for all readers( like chapter 15 ). And it does not have some general and conceptual materials.

I already make bone broth with the bones of my leftover chicken and find it delicious and fairly easy. This is great for additional ideas. It lists the form of bones that have the best benefit. Gave great tips. Like the fast cool down tip for my broth. Loved the seasoning for my broth. I do find that I feel better when I have my broth but never made a concentrated effort to do a week with lots of broth every day. There are enough variations and additions so I don't feel like I will be eating just liquid and often the broth is added to other soups, drinks and dishes so It will not be boring. Can't wait for the results!!!! Love All the recipes. Only tried 2 so far but bought bacon for the maple bacon lentil soup and will be trying lots more.!!!

Enjoy making bone broth easy and do all of mind in pressure cook. Tried days of cooking but, not needed to do that so I don't.

Good read and love the spelled out 7 day menu. Recipes are very tasty, be sure to try all of them. I make all my bone broth from her recipes. I do lose if I stay on..

I have been brewing my own bone broth for a few months now. I always had so many questions like why sometimes by brew would gel and how long should I roast my bones prior to making bone broth. This 7 day bone broth diet plan and cookbook answered all of those questions and provided even more highly valuable information! I will admit, I have been using the cookbook and other background information more than the diet plan (i love carbs). However, I do think that the diet plan is a great alternative for someone who has done paleo or whole 30. I have to fully admit that this was a hard read at times. As a black woman who grew up poor it is especially hard to confirm what you have always known as a child--that there is a Black Elite. I will start with the good in this book. Half of what Graham mentions from a historical standpoint I already knew, not because I have a degree in History but from research I'd done on my own. This book taps into the history rarely taught to mainstream America in general such as the Les Gens De Couleur Libres and the Black Republicans of the South. Also, Graham does an excellent job of listing the ways in which black elites attained their fortunes, either through an inheritance from the Master or from hard work. He gives excellent examples of blacks who were determined to be the best that they could be while they persevere against the segregation and injustices of the time. His thorough knowledge and insight is the reason that I have given him four stars.Now to the bad stuff. I was none too thrilled by the comments that his great grandmother made, especially the part about (paraphrasing) "Nappy head negroes protesting". What did she think they were supposed to do? The protests of that generation weren't as violent as the black youth of today. This books was not an eye opener of the black elites, particularly the ones who subscribe to the light, bright and damn near white because I can recall those very people looking down on me as a child. What I did find shocking is their indignation of how whites treating blacks as a whole while they lived in comfort, criticizing the average black person along the way. I can understand that a large majority of blacks may have been deserving of some of the criticism due to playing out some of the stereotypes leveled against them. However, I could not reconcile the idea of makes white people feel guilty when elite blacks wanted no part of ghetto children either.I found the identity crisis of black elites in this text disheartening and at times felt some empathy for them. It must have been difficult to be educated and affluent while having to apologize to lower class blacks who viewed them as sell outs. Conversely, it must have felt bad proving that you are just as good as your white counterparts yet hardly ever receiving recognition of such achievements. The problem I could not get past is the argument that you sympathized with the average black person while trying to pretend that you were not black. Not all of the black elites engage in such behavior. To use myself for example, I grew up poor but I am the only black person on my block. After an 8 year military career, graduating from the University of Washington and being the only black person on my dead end street, I also subscribe to staying away from those who draw too much attention, are loud, ghetto, crass and looking for trouble.Here's the difference between myself as a successful person and others. While I would not act the way a lot of black people do in the media, I am not ashamed to be black. When you start bleaching your skin, getting nose jobs to look white, passing for white and living as a white person and telling relatives to stay out of the sun because they will get "too black" you have taken it too far. Graham's accounts were honest. I am happy that some naturally light skinned people recognized the harm on behaving in such a manner. However, if you are going to look down on a part of what you are and cannot control don't blame white people for doing it too. Overall, this is a good read and a good conversation piece for all who may want to understand a hidden aspect of history or have a book club.

I found this book to be very interesting and quite intriguing to know that there is a sub-class within a class. I am much aware of our African American history and understand how class and shades of black played a pivotal role in the make-up of our History. However, what I did not know was the different clubs and social functions that were exclusive to these individuals based on pedigree.I just finished reading "The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration" by Isabel Wilkerson that chronicles the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled South for northern and western cities in search for a better life from 1915 to 1970. This book is definitely a necessary read. . Nevertheless, there is a stark difference between the two books. The Warmth of the Other Suns details the struggles and success of African Americans that was able to make a way through hard work and education. While this book would not allow those same people to be accepted into their elite society because they do not possess the same pedigree, yet they come from the same struggles.I do admire the author for having the courage to write this book and appreciate yet another learning experience as part of my African American history. Several things I will note are that there is plenty of name-dropping as well as repetitive overtones in the flow of his writing. Therefore, I found myself skipping a few of the pages because the same thing was already mentioned in previous chapters. In addition, the flow of the book tends to be a bit choppy in various sections but overall I understood his point.I read many of the reviews both negative and positive, so you will need to have an open mind while reading and just take it with a grain of salt. It is what it is and this is just another story in the life and times of African American History.Happy Reading!

I'm an old white woman who has had very little opportunity to interact with black society other than in a work environment. The world has changed since my youth and I was grateful to be able to read this book. I have always been aware that there was no "separate, but equal" nor recognition under the Constitution as a full person, no qualitative administration of the 13th and 14th Amendments during our history, but have been amazed at how black society has brought to the fore their talents and wisdom. This book explains much of that and they are a group of people who truly understand the concepts of networking and cooperation and its relevancy to success. On the flip side, I also saw some protective styles of bigotry in the book. That being said, we are all products of our environment and society and some are simply able to transcend it. Kudos

This work provides a comprehensive who's who of the American Black elite, and a much-appreciated tutorial in their professional and social institutions. Here is a segment of society that most of us are unaware of in its totality. Their clubs, associations and institutions have evolved as highly-insular, effective educational and philanthropic groups by necessity. Outlining the history and activities of the Black elite city-by-city, the author enhances the reader's knowledge through his own family's experiences. Well-written and recommended.

Thank you Mr Graham for following Mr Lewis advice to write this book. My professors sent their kid to Camp Atwater, engaged in numerous clubs and sent their kids to Howard, Spellman and Morehouse. When I enrolled in Howard in 1961, I was thrown in with students wearing mink coats and mink check books, new cars and 4.0 GPA. I was out of my element and until I read your book - I have been going up the down elevator. Thank you so very much

Pros: I really liked this book and author's intention and energy. She does offer some good exercise examples and encourages moms-to-be to basically get up and get their butt and their bump moving - anything helps! It was a nice motivator for me to start thinking in this direction and hopefully, be active once I feel better after the first trimester is over. Aside from the numerous typos, it was a fast read. I finished it in 3 days and marked pages that are essential to reference with a sticky page marker.Cons: 1. It was alarming to me that the author kept recommending low fat options, dairy in particular. Being on a low fat diet is never good, but it is especially not recommended in pregnancy (and especially, if you have fertility issues). Consuming high (good) fat diet (such as avocados, full fat farm dairy (eggs, grass fed butter, milk, yogurt), nuts, etc.) is super important for fetal development (and for being fertile). There is research out there on this topic and low fat dairy in particular is linked to infertility. Not to mention the obvious facts about the processing of the food to make it "low fat". Low fat food is over-processed food with a bunch of additives to compensate for the full flavor (usually more carbs and sugar). Bottom line: it is so unhealthy for you and for baby. I am shocked to see this advise in this type of a book.2. It was really hard to read often times becuase of SO MANY typos and bad grammar! It was so annoying! Every page had at least 1-2 typos/mistakes, which, in my opinion, compromised the validity of the information and author's credibility. It was a turn off for me. The other thing I would like to warn readers about , especially if you have sensitivity to scents or nausea - is that this book's pages smell really strong. It smells like newspaper and the quality of the paper is like a newspaper. I had to hold the book far away from my face or even vent the pages before I could read.3. In addition, everything in this book is black and white, even recipe pictures (which do not look appetizing in black and white). There are 6 color pictures of some foods at the end of the book, but that's it. One other thing: the author repeats the same information quite a bit, which to me seems like an unnecessary filler.

Too complicated. I gave to Goodwill.
