Nice to know that I’m not going crazy. As an engineer, I had not been exposed to the literary mumbo jumbo of post modernism or social constructivism. I feel better now to at least understand where such ignorance (there are no objective facts?) comes from. No wonder we have flat earthers and climate change deniers in 2018.It’s sad that the methods used in the 50s and 60s by the tobacco industry to instill doubt about sound science (tobacco kills) still work well today. The earth is round. Anthropomorphic climate change is real. Our current POTUS is a serial liar.Okay, so this book did not lift my confidence in humanity, it did remind me that the fight to support science is always important and worth while. Very informative, and definitely worth the read.

Why are "fake news" and "alternative facts" on the rise? Why is it that truth doesn't seem to matter any more? In this timely and thought-provoking book, Lee McIntyre examines the root causes of the "post-truth" phenomenon. Long before Donald Trump ran for president, long before Alex Jones or Fox and Friends, McIntyre saw this problem coming. In previous books, he tried to warn us; now, with careful research, a keen philosophical eye, and rare literary wit, McIntye gives us deep insight into why. Contemporary psychologists call our attention, time and again, to innate cognitive biases; McIntyre takes the diagnosis to the next level, reminding us that willful dishonesty and deliberate propaganda are also major parts of the story. He shows that our current predicament has roots in technical innovation (the internet), corporate propaganda (e.g. tobacco and climate denialism), postmodern evasion (truth is relative), and the religious impulse (pretending to know things we don't really know). A carefully researched and beautifully written treatment of an enormously important phenomenon. Highly recommended!

I really liked this book. It's hard to imagine a more timely book than Post-Truth. If you're worried about the current political situation in the USA, or just want to know where "fake news" and "alternative facts" came from, here is the answer. Lee McIntyre digs deeply into the roots of post-truth, and argues that the success of science denial (starting all the way back in the 1950s!) paved the way for post-truth. He also explores the contemporary stakes, arguing that post-truth is the first step in creating an autocracy. Though the topic is chilling and may keep you up at night, this is an easy and pleasurable read. I highly recommend this book.

The author defines post-truth as the "Contention that feelings are more accurate than facts, for the purpose of the political subordination of reality." He uses the history of the cigarette industry as a pattern people employ to attack existing science: set up your own experts; use the idea that it is "controversial" to demand equal time to established facts; use the media; and do lobbying, funded by those with financial interests. He uses climate change as an example, although he mentions instances like the vaccine-autism controversy and intelligent design. He goes into some of the cognitive biases that make us susceptible to fake news, such as discomfort at believing two contradictory things at once; giving more weight to the information that agrees with our ideas; and the tendency to dig in further if our belief is challenged. One thing that was interesting to me was the "Dunning-Kruger effect," where our lack of ability in something causes us to overestimate our skill--and the people with the least ability tend to think they have the most skill! Another nugget was that conservatives' brains are more susceptible to conspiracy theories than liberals. Of course, he includes the information silos and the vast choice of (often unvetted) information available. Remedies he suggests are to attack untruth where it occurs (don't assume that people couldn't believe that, no matter how weird); flood with the truth (people have a tipping point where the facts sink in); and remember that graphs and pictures can be more persuasive than narrative. The writing style and the examples the author used made for interesting reading. He persuaded me that feeling that something is right can outweigh the facts. I FEEL IT!

Excellent read. Not only is it wonderfully written, it is full of insights into our current predicament where large portions of the world believe emotions matter more than facts.Post-truth is a problem, and as Mcintyre argues, you cannot address a problem until you understand it. Post-truth, he argues, has its roots in science denialism and post-modernism. Add to this some of our cognitive biases as well as a fractured media landscape and you have the recipe needed for a post-truth era.An important point is that those that are "post-truth" don't deny facts, but merely believe facts are subordinate to our political point of view. In an era of increased political polarization, this is a problem. Facts that are seen as inconvenient are often dismissed as politically biased.Highly recommended for all those seeking some light in today's dark post-truth world

nice size for travel. has a lot of information. seemed thou that information repeated it self couple of times in different sections. Could be a little more condensed. there is some information missing.. like train. it is a new city so things change. they have the train to the Burj Khalifa tower. its very easy..train takes you to the Dubai mall and then long cat walk takes you to the huge shopping center and the tower is right there on the ground level. reserve the time for the observation deck because there is a schedule (every 30min or hour) for it to go up for the lowest price (about $30 a person if I remember right). if you want to go right away you will pay double. so reserve the ticket and go shopping, while waiting. there is an amazing fountain show outside at night..music and fountains..great show.really impressive!!! take a short walk outside by the little river around the tower after 6pm, when sun is down. if you want to go anywhere else you will need a taxi. I had a connecting flight, so the train to the mall and to see the tallest building in the world tour worked great to me.

I LOVE DK guides and have used them for about 20 years, but this one fell way short. I'd visited Dubai over 17 years ago, so expected the DK guide to give me what I've always expected - simple info, easy directions, highlights of sights and transportation. Information was repetitive and not complete. It was nearly useless for me. I was glad I'd also purchased the Rough Guide, way more useful.

I was really surprised by this book. For how small it is, it covers more than I thought it would. It focuses on 5 areas. 1-Abu Dhabi and 4 areas/regions in Dubai. Detailed maps are provided for all (The fold out map is a bit awkward but there are also several mini maps throughout the book with marked numbers of the places/sites you are reading about. The "10" is on account of the frequent lists given throughout the guide in groups of 10. It is not overly detailed but gives you many options to consider visiting or seeing without having to wade through a lot of extrenuous information to get to the nitty-gritty and, typical of DK publications, they are not skimpy on the amount of color photographs (although it is a small guide book, made that way for ease of portability, so some of the photos will naturally be quite small). It is not going to have extensive detail on the history of Dubai or the UAE nor on all of the customs and traditions of the people. For those who will be visting Dubai for a long time, going there more than once, or consider relocating, this book along with Lonley Planet's "Dubai City Guide" and Culture Smart's "The essential guide to customs and culture of UAE" make a great trio.

This is a very good travel guide. It has top 10 highlights; top 10 of everything such as restaurants, outdoor activities, shopping malls and souks, art galleries, excursions and tours, children's attractions, free stuff, culture and tradition, and resorts. Also lists area by area, and streetsmart info such as places to stay, getting around, phrases, etc. Maps are also included. The pictures are great.

I had a long layover in Dubai and wanted to make the most of it. I picked up the Top10 book and scoured over it on my flights to come up with a solid plan. Although I didn't get to do everything I wanted, this book helped to make my incidental stop in the Middle East very productive! In case you're interested, I arrived late on a Thursday. Got a good night's sleep, had some breakfast in the hotel (the Le Meridien by the airport - so convenient!) and headed off to Dubai Mall for a quick look around - inside and out - and our scheduled tour of Burj Khalifa. After that, I parted ways with my colleague and did some souvenir shopping, followed by a trip to the beach - gorgeous! I stopped for a bit of lunch and to plan the rest of my day, then headed to Old Dubai to catch a river cruise. A great value, and a nice way to relax and take in the cityscape and all of the great ships / yachts parked in the bay. It was actually just me on the cruise I was on, and there was absolutely no wait. I had a late night, so I didn't ask too many questions, but the driver (captain?) was very helpful in answering the few questions I did ask. Then, I did some shopping in Old Dubai (the souks had finally opened by this time) and tried to keep from buying too many pair of those gorgeous shoes. If I thought I could bring them back to the US, I would have picked up a few spices as well. I didn't risk it, but took some gorgeous pictures! I headed back to the hotel to shower and pack my bags, then made one final stop back to Dubai Mall to watch the 7pm fountain display. If you can swing it, definitely go! It was the perfect way to end my trip... and all of these things were hand-picked from the Top10 book. Enjoy your trip!

This is another great tour book from DK. As always lots of great pictures and lots of great maps. The book gives you an idea of what you can do in a day, two days, etc. It groups sights by proximity and also tells you if you should buy tickets on line for a particular site so you don't have to wait in line when you get there.

These Emirates are changing so quickly and much of this book is already out of date. I used this book to plan a two day trip to Dubai on my way to Pakistan and found the listing of open metro stops to be inaccurate (it had some that weren't yet in service and was also completely missing a few that were open). The hours and descriptions of some of the museums and historical areas were also incorrect. I can't really blame the book since the rate of construction in these areas is so rapid. I'd recommend doing additional research on the Internet. The included map was very useful and I did not need to purchase an additional one. The photos, as with all Eyewitness Travel Guides, are great and give you a good preview of what to expect. On a side note, I'd highly recommend going on a Desert Safari if you have more than 1 day in Dubai and/or aren't planning on going to Abu Dhabi. There's only so much time one can spend shopping :)

We just got back from the UAE and this was a perfect guide for our stay. We actually want to go back since we didn’t get to do everything we wanted to do in four days.
