Joyce Tenneson is one of the most creative photographers working today. Her range runs from the psychological self-portraits of her youth, through the haunting, ethereal mysteries of femininity, to the socially assertive portraits of her more recent work, as well as her preoccupations with the beauties of living, natural forms. While some may object to the lack of contrast and definition in some of her most famous work, its high-keyed lack of sharpness and air of unreality is exactly the point! Some of her other work shows that she indeed knows how to make a properly exposed, full-scale photograph. Her work rarely hits you between the eyes, rather it is its subtlety which is its principal attraction. This book provides a good introduction to the different aspects of her work, and leaves the appreciative viewer eager to see more, through her numerous monographs. One minor disappointment is its lack of full-sized examples of her excellent commercial work; another is the lack of any technical background or notes at all.

Love Joyce Tenneson's work. Beautiful book.

I first learned about Joyce Tenneson in a beginning photography class. I subsequently purchased this book, refer to it regularly, and use it for inspiration to shoot interesting portraits. I am taking a self portraiture class this summer due, in part, to Ms. Tenneson's own self portrait work. While she has topical books on a single subject, this one is a bit of a sampler of her work. It's a great first Tenneson book. I expect to own more.

another look thru the eye of this wonderous world Ms. Tenneson sees. a most interesting history of her works and insights I love all of her books and I am not a photographer, but she draws me into her lens so instantly I have given her books to many of my friends as gifts and they are so grateful to see her work!

Joyce Tenneson is an incredibly talented photographer.

For some reason I had to have this book. I am so glad I decided to purchase it. I love the warm earth tones and unique style.

Very interesting back story and very good photography.

Joyce's book of photos is a visual treat. She poises her subjects in ways that make them timeless.I remember hanging one her exhibits at the Palm Beach Photographic Center in the mid-90's.Thaaat was a great honor.

A paleontologist and an artist go on a long road trip around the American West in a dark blue Ford pickup. They write a densely illustrated book “Crusin’ the Fossil Freeway” that is all of the following:1. A primer in geology, a history of fossil discoveries in the West.2. A travelog.3. A picture book of paleo-themed roadside attractions.4. A picture book of fossils.5. A collection of paleo-themed cartoons and surrealistic art.6. A homage to amateur and professional fossil enthusiasts. The paleontologist is Kirk Johnson, chief curator of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, whoe specialty is paleobotany. The artist is Ray Troll, an Alaskan known for his fish-themed art. Troll he has done lots of paleo-related work over a period of a few decades. In the words of Johnson, Troll “is no photo-realist, he’s a scientific surrealist.” In 1999 Johnson and Troll collaborated on an exhibit at the Denver Museum called “Crusin in the Fossil Freeway.” Part of that exhibit was an old Volvo station wagon called the “Evolvo”, with Charles Darwin at the wheel. This seems to have inspired the idea of taking a real fossil road trip.Associated with the book is a color map designed by Troll, which can be purchased separately as a 4X5 ft poster. It stretches from Washington to North Dakota to the north, and from Arizona to Oklahoma to the south. In this map, one sees the usual major highways, rivers, cities, etc., but each state has several dozen labeled drawings of reconstructed fossil plants and animals from the region, plus roadside attractions. There is also a small drawing of a cheeseburger in each state. A part of the map is shown as a frontispiece for each chapter. Clearly, in the West, fossils are everywhere.I am a big fan of Ray Troll’s work. In 2005, I reviewed “Rapture of the Deep,” which is a compendium of his art, for the Paleontograph. “Crusin’” contains many examples of the type of humorous/surrealistic paleo-themed cartoons he is known for. My favorite is the one captioned: “Have mercy on those who suffer from P.N.S. (Paleo Nerd Syndrome)” The only thing I’m disappointed about is “Cruisin’” is written entirely from the viewpoint of Kirk Johnson. Ray Troll is only mentioned in the third person and only in a semi-disparaging way (which is clearly affectionate teasing since the two are good friends). For instance, Troll is constantly referred to as “fossil-loving, but fossil-blind”, i.e. cannot recognized fossils in front of this nose. I am interested in art, so I would have liked Troll’s explanations about why he drew what he drew, much as was done in “Rapture of the Deep.”On the other hand, there is no doubt but that Kirk Johnson did an excellent job on all the many topics he covered. This book is the perfect gift for your favorite paleo-nerd, even if it is yourself.

Very impressive visually. A beautiful book. Geological explanations are creative and easily understood by non-geologists (example: the pig in page 9). Maps are a bit overcrowded and I was sorry the book did not cover the eastern portion of the country, where I live (Virginia). Localities shown are too far for me to get to. Of course , the eastern portion of the country seems less rich in fossils, (except Pennsylvania?)The book is about a subject that I love, paleontology. My favorite fossils are the ammonites, more so than the dinosaurs. They have aesthetic value, in addition to the scientific value. Of course, dinosaurs are more popular, specially among the younger, but they also take much more work to put together for viewing in museums. The recent find of three triceratops in Wyoming should give this book added value since the authors treat Wyoming sites with special emphasis.

We bought this book to get some ideas about where to visit the area. We are REALLY into paleontology these days and this book is like trilobite candy! The writing is fun for all ages and the illustrations are beautiful and creative. Some say the maps are too busy but that is part of the fun and style of the art.Not sure if we will get the map but the book is worth every penny. Let's put it this way, before I started homeschooling my son, I knew nothing about this and cared less. Now, I see fossils everywhere, we time travel to the late cretaceous and have a huge group of scutosauruses grazing in the backyard!

Kirk Johnson captures the inveterate geekiness of a hard core paleontologist who started young and never veered from his love of rocks or redheads with rock tumblers.Illustrator Ray Troll, the Ketchikan artist who is responsible for all the "Spawn Til You Die" t-shirts and many other fin (sic) art renditions of Alaskan humor, does an impressive job of filling the pages with more stuff than you can possibly absorb. When trying to follow maps of their adventures, I would veer off road (much like my geologist husband is wont to do on similar treks) due to some tricerotops in the way. But, that is the point of the book. The fanciful drawings stoke the imagination, and Johnson's big circle way of writing (start in one place and wander all over to make a bunch of interesting points, to arrive back at an original thought with an fun twist) will make you want to fill your car with dino juice and hit the road for your own rock hound adventure. If you have kids wild for dinosaurs, this could be a fabulous off-beat way for them to experience what it really is like to be a flesh and blood guy who never grows out of it. It may charm them or scare them away, and I'm not about to say which way is best.

The great part of this volume is the interview with Eugenie Brazier contained in the first pages. It is a window into, basically, the time in France just before World War I and until World War II. The recipes in the book are classics of the regional cuisine around Lyon but they are presented in a deceptively simple way. "La Mere" is frank to say she learned 'on the job' and came from humble beginnings...but such is not the 'stuff' of three-star Michelin restaurants so a great deal has been left unsaid in this book. With 'simple' cuisine, 'the devil is in the details' and so it must be here. The quality on the plate comes from carefully sourced ingredients and their like is not available in the United States. These are good recipes and a careful cook will make some tasty meals...but the result will not be 'three-star', if only because we do not have items like fine flavored truffles and the carefully-raised chicken from Bresse. Then, the details of how many of the dishes are refined are left to the imagination as well. Still, there are classics of French cooking: veal Pojarski, beef Bourguinon, salmon steaks 'Bonne Femme' (home-style), various ways with filet of sole and a good selection of traditional desserts and dessert soufflés.The book includes a good many period photographs of La Mere and of her restaurant and of some of her staff. There is nothing pretentious here. Today, three-star restaurants need to have very expensive designer décor and service is much more elaborate than the picture we are given from 'back in the day.' Of course, the cuisine has progressed greatly as well. This book was first published in 1977 and reflects a career already completed well before that time. Its purpose is to honor a woman whose achievements should not be forgotten and to honor a period in Lyon when the cuisine of 'the Mothers' carried the French culinary banner far forward and in a way both simpler than Parisian style while still remaining satisfying and true to its region. It adds something to a shelf of books owned by a lover of French cuisine but it also adds to my appreciation of the effort and the work undertaken by Julia Child to demystify French traditional cooking for American audiences.

Eugénie Brazier was one of the icons of twentieth century French gastronomy. Not only did she boast three Michelin stars for each of her two restaurants (in Lyon and Col de la Luère) but she helped train several other important cuisiniers, including the renowned Paul Bocuse (who began his apprenticeship ironing tablecloths). One of the most rewarding parts of this book is the brief collection of La Mère’s reminiscences and some fine, old photographs. The recipes themselves, written in an off hand professional fashion, are standard fare (poulets demi-deuil, tournedos Rossini) and can be found in many other sources, though it is nice to find them all in the same volume. Combined with a few of her elegant menus, they offer a pleasant, nostalgic tour through a past era of haute cuisine.

An excellent reprint of a classic. An excellent book for the more advanced book as the recipes take a little savy about cooking.

Nice to read about this wonderful woman after having enjoyed her food so many times in the past. A classic and a mentor in modern French cooking, she should get more credit than she does.

Not always easy to find the recipe you're looking for... No pictures at all. Very often quite complicated, more of a "restaurant" type cuisine.Unless you are a very very good cook....

You can never read too many cookbooks. This one is a treasure. Eugénie Brazier is the only woman to win six Michelin stars for her restaurants. Although the recipes in this book are not written in the way we today are accustomed to, it's still possible to learn from her methods and ingredients. Unfortunately, La Mère was able to source fresh ingredients from the Lyon countryside; we no longer have such fresh food available to us and it obviously affects the flavor of the dishes. The story of her life is well worth reading, her rise from a farm girl to the woman who fearlessly ran restaurants and trained many now famous chefs. This is a must have addition to any cookbook collection.

Great recipes book but not only recipes, lots to learn about Eugenie Brazier. I definitely recommend, it probably is the best book about her and her recipes that is available in english.

It is amazing to read about the mother of modern cuisine.

My foodie friend loved it.

Wonderful book for beginning charoal. Still working my way through the chapters. Would definitely recommend.

OK, but not what i was expecting.

My husband loves this book and it has helped him with his art. It has given him lots of tips on how to perfect his drawings.

As described. Easy to follow.

It touches on still-life, protraits, flowers,Animals, w lanscapes. So, for someone who has never worked (properly) with charcoal, I find this to be a good beginning

If you want to learn something about drawing with charcoal, I'm sure there are better choices, but I'm not sure there are worse.
